Brilliant article on the Metro website. Search for 'Jack Vale freaks out public'.

"Jack Vale researched the social media profiles of people living in his area and began approaching them on the street.

Addressing strangers by their first name and revealing intimate details such as birthdays and parents’ nicknames, Vale caught many off-guard."

I do but only on here. I don't use other social media like this. I have a Twit account for work and that's it.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

My FB profile is totally private. Only people I know in real life are friends (family and genuine friends). I hardly ever post anything. Just comment on others and chat occasionally to friends in Oz.

And there's this profile here.

Don't do any others.

I know the real names of quite a few on here, but I would never blurt it out. Not on here or anywhere else for that matter for THAT exact reason.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I know more about the private lives of some people on here than I do about my own family. I think pouring out your heart on sites that are easily accessible to the public is laying yourself open to this sort of thing.

I sometimes go to post something then think 'do I really want strangers to know this' and not post. Not all the time though.

Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

I don't think I do...I have my correct birthdate on FB, but only have people I actually know as friends...I mainly post jokey statuses similar to what I do on here and would never air my dirty laundry on social media. I do post slightly more personal details on an "Arse End of yesteryear" FB page, but nothing that could get me in any trouble (apart from 'fessing up to an underage lager shandy). I've posted much more intimate stuff on here, but as only a handful of folk know my real name and location, I feel fairly safe so far...now bugger off out of my backyard Steel!

I think people give away way too much of their private life on here and other sites we use so it hasn't surprised me to find someone used information like this.

kinky heaven

There's a guy who does something similar in America and here with a video camera, he angers a lot of people although they are being filmed anyway in the streets etc etc with cctv.

Quite amusing and thought provoking at the same time

kinky land

I google myself and my family/close friends often.

I use 1 social network site, however everything is locked down to friends only.

I dont play games or anything on there, I use it as my parents do not live here in the Uk so its basically an easy way of uploading pics/vids for them to see, and I use it to keep an eye on my daughter. (she uses it too much impo)

I had to google why everyone kept putting hash tags with their comments, There will be a toilet flush tweet in Buckingham palace, the white house & number 10; before I even consider tweeting myself

To be fair we all know about your childrens lives and your ex etc.

Now ok you may only be telling people bits of it and not your real name etc but it is still a lot of personal information.

I am just a privacy freak but I think I am glad I am as since using the web for many years I have seen/ heard of some nasty things done to people who gave out that little bit too much information because they "trusted" the person typing back at them.

We are on a few sites ( not all about sex )but I only post what I don't mind people reading and 99% of the time it would be just general things.

I know I might be OTT but there is nothing wrong with being careful

There are various lookup databases e.g. 192 where a name and town (or even just a name if it's not too common) will give you all the info on a person and ALL their neighbours, this is from the Electoral Roll. This can in turn be used to find out more if they have been careless, but for the purposes of the show first names of all household over 18 birth dates credit ratings etc. it's all there.

Which makes a bit of a mockery of shredding Xmas card envelopes to prevent ID theft! why dig through bins when the Internet will give you more anyway

I use social network sites for the purpose that they are made for, so I don't worry about anything I put online.

It's the people who use such sites for sinister reasons that need to be concerned.

If you're doing nothing wrong nobody gives a flying fuck about your life.

I try not to give too much away in the Forums as they can be read by non members plus I had a stalker who made my life a misery a few months ago which is one of the reasons I left for three months. Sorted now, I hope but still a bit catious about giving too much away.

It amuses me when people say they use social media sites but they have it 'locked down to friends and family only'. There is no privacy, everyone can see it! People post pics of their kids online, personal details, it's just mental.

I have fb but I don't have any info on there apart from my name. I can see everything that my friends post on other people's walls, yet they seem to think it's private.
