One of our bugbears is visiting the doctors and seeing the "Did not attend" figure, stubbornly around 15%.

How about a system where you are fined for a non-attendance. Say £15. And use that to fund free prescriptions.

I quite like the idea of lodging a deposit with your surgery against any missed appointments.

Paying for missed appointments is already in operation at some dental surgeries.

Doctors, however, tend to overbook and are quite pleased if the occasional patient fails to trap - unless it's someone they know to be in poor health generally.
