"My biggest annoyance is the fact that they are free in Scotland. Are we not a United Kingdom? No-one chooses to be ill...

"My biggest annoyance is the fact that they are free in Scotland. Are we not a United Kingdom? If so then they should be charged the same price regardless of where you live The Scottish parliament decided this .....suggest you take it up with your local government" It was, and is, a gimmick. The vast majority of prescriptions were free beforehand. What we have now is lots of people who are perfectly able to pay getting free prescriptions. The same applies to free bus passes for over 60s. As the Institute for Fiscal Studies report said yesterday- it can't go on. There simply isn't the money.

Everybody dies wheather they smoke or not so does it really make any difference? " No that's not the point I'm making. Prescriptions can save your life..fags can kill you. But people will pay hand over fist for fags, even out of a fag machine at +30% markup. Case in point, I think it's good that people should pay as less meds are wasted. People will actually take what they are given since they have paid for it. **tin hat on**

Everybody dies wheather they smoke or not so does it really make any difference? Yes. Smokers die sooner and at greater cost to the NHS. " Actually, smokers are a net BENEFIT to the economy, as they pay shed loads of tax, and have the decency to die young, thus not claiming pensions for years and years. One thing the smoking ban has done is force us all to pay more tax, to make up for the lost tax from people smoking less or quitting PLUS the extra cost of non and ex-smokers living to be longer, since it's old people who cost the NHS the most. When the ban was introduced, I did some sums and the cost to the taxpayer in reduced duty alone came to be about £20million. A year. So six years on, that's a shortfall of £120million. Then add in the extra spending needed on all the living longer ex smokers who gave up because of the ban (I know a few) and ask yourself why you are paying the tax you are. I wonder if the smoking ban would have been so popular if people realised they'd have to pay for it ?

"I pay dd for mine....I take post transplant drugs so not a choice to pay and need one of my drugs alone is nearly £900 per box! I dont mind paying what I find shocking though is the post code lottery of certain drugs not being available to everyone " I know all to well the actual cost of immunosuppressant meds having had 2 kidney transplants and that you usually have to take a few different meds with them too so paying for a script would be expensive. I'd recommend anyone who regularly gets 2 or more items per month to look at getting a pre-payment certificate, have a look at this NHS web site. www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1127.aspx

"I get a medical exemption certificate for being on thyroxine but yet ALL of my meds are free. Why can they just give me that one drug free and then charge for other drugs not related to that illness? " I have been saying this for years. I (MrJ) have glaucoma so will be on eye drops till I die. Which I think should be "free". But I would have no problem paying if I needed a course of antibiotics (for example).

"The £7.50 or whatever it is now is already a joke!! It doesnt even make sense, you can get paracetamol on them and have to pay the full whack... They cost 16p in the shops! Its stupid!! C x" But you don't need a prescription to buy paracetamol you can buy it over the counter. The simple answer is if you don't need a prescription to purchase a med and it's cheaper than the cost of a script just buy it.

Every smoker that gives up aged 55 ends up costing the exchequer more than if they carried on and died at 65. Of course there are some offsets - increased productivity for example. But the bottom line is smokers pay more to the country than they cost. If you remove that source of income, you have to find it elsewhere.

"It's a shame that people that are hit with more price increases in the areas where they need to be looking at decreasing the cost. I have asthma and have payed for my inhalers all my life because I have worked all my life... yet drug addicted down the road never payed A penny my inhalers go up to keep his free how's this fair. " It isn't that simple. The drugs bill is controlled by big pharma and the government negotiations on what we will buy, how much and at what price. The prescription charge means that some cheap things cost more and some mega expensive things are hugely subsidised. Then there is the decision about what the prescription charge should be. Then the decision on who pays it and who doesn't. If you want to think of it as you have paid in and therefore should get it free whereas someone else hasn't so shouldn't then you are not grasping the importance of public health, the cost savings from managing conditions and a whole host of other complexities on changing demographics, technology and health and the system of primary, secondary, chronic and acute care.

I know but it is linked to the overall NHS bill. The charge comes from that, ideology about paying etc. People do the "paracetamol only costs pennies and I am being charged £7.80" complaint conflating the cost of their prescription with the cost of the drug. The drugs bill is a major part of NHS cost control measures.

"The challenge with free prescriptions is that, unlike free bus passes, people who CAN afford to pay and who are WILLING to pay, don't have that choice. If you have a bus pass, you can choose not to use it and to pay your fare. If you need a prescription, you have to pay the prescription charge. That's £7.85 in England. " You can choose to pay the prescription charge if you want, even if you're exempt.

"Scotland has one of the highest rates of death from cardiac related illnesses in Europe, and has on average far longer waiting times for ambulance response and eventual treatment than England. Free scripts are nothing more than an appeasement." Ambulance response times are roughly the same as in England, if you factor out the vast rural areas which England doesn't have, and the death rates for CHD are roughly similar, too. But this is relevant, why? As far as free prescriptions- the government- any government- do this all the time in various ways and I, for one, am perfectly happy to appeased or bribed whenever they wish

Patents last a very long time- 25 years? I know that GP's have to prescribe generics and I think it's up to the pharmacist to chose which drug name within that but even so, the cost of antibiotics alone is often way, way more than even £10. Let's face it, 'free ' health care costs. Drug companies are huge corporate machines and public health is the cash cow. Poor government stuck in the middle. Damned if they do charge and damned if they don't

I cant believe that anyone is putting this much faith in the IFS report, its a pile of mince. For a start it states that it is based on assumptions given to them by the OBR a branch of the westminster treasury. Do you think they are neutral on the issue. Its another piece of jerrymandering from downing street. You can make statistics prove whatever suits your needs, the outputs are only as reliable as the inputs. And the same report states that independance would provide scotland with the opportunity to implement a more efficient tax regime than the uk has, making it more competative and attractive to international business.

"Scotland has one of the highest rates of death from cardiac related illnesses in Europe, and has on average far longer waiting times for ambulance response and eventual treatment than England. Free scripts are nothing more than an appeasement." I think overall the NHS are good value so I'm not convened by a ten pound prescription charge. Im not overly keen on other member countries not paying their way though and I agree with the above post on their thoughts. It's outrageous that the English tax payer burdens the cost for everyone else. It just makes this whole Independance issue even more of a joke. I bet you wouldn't be getting free prescriptions if you did break away and possibly end up paying more than ten pounds too. So to the poster above who quoted its free with a lol after , careful how you vote or you might not be lol.

"Boils me this topic......yet again the English suffer the most!!....... Give Scotland and Wales their independence and cut the fooking purse strings!! As they still love to take money from the central pot!! want independence then let them stand in their own 2 feet.....then us English would get free prescriptions, free university fees etc.... As it would only be OUR pot!! " first off dont believe the hype, the myth(yes myth) that england subsides the rest off the uk was blown away when a former chancelor admitted that the treasury have been manipulating the figures for decades. As i have sa before you can mske stats prove anything. as for free prescriptions we have them yes, but at a cost there are a number of treatments and drugs (especially for cancer) which are only available in england. so at the risk of repeating myself, swings and roundabouts.

"My biggest annoyance is the fact that they are free in Scotland. Are we not a United Kingdom? If so then they should be charged the same price regardless of where you live Erm.....there's always been big differences in the way things are done in the different constituent parts of the UK. Going by this logic, the different legal and education systems that Scotland has had for hundreds of years is unacceptable. Not necessarily a fan of the peescription policy (it's free here too) and not a nationalist btw! next thing you know they will want to stop the boyo's in the valleys from worrying sheep " Hey leave our sheep alone they have never said no, baaaa means yes lol

"Free in Scotland.... thank fook I wonder if they will be free if Scotland breaks away from the UK. Yesterday's Institute for Fiscal Studies report makes that increasingly unlikely. Unlikely there will be a break away, or unlikely there will be free prescriptions if they do?" Increasingly unlikely there will be a breakaway. Increasingly unlike free prescriptions for all would be able to continue in any separate Scotland. Why continue to pay bribes when the baw's bust?

"In New Zealand, prescriptions only cost a pound!" if every one paid a pound for a script regardless of income etc, that would even it out for every one surely everyone can raise a pound for drugs they need, after all its far less than a drink in the pub

"The prescriptions in Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland are only free at the point of purchase. The budget is set for each area and it is up to the country how they divide it up.Other departments get cut back to subsidise the prescriptions. If in England the government want to give out free prescriptions then they can but will have to cut back on other areas. In Scotland other areas of the budget suffer like education to pay for Salmond's bribe. As the other poster stated many cancer and other drugs are not available in Scotland due to this drain on the Scottish health budget. I can afford to pay for prescriptions and should pay for them so that more money goes into local heath services." and maybe a bit for us poor students

Everybody dies wheather they smoke or not so does it really make any difference? No that's not the point I'm making. Prescriptions can save your life..fags can kill you. But people will pay hand over fist for fags, even out of a fag machine at +30% markup. Case in point, I think it's good that people should pay as less meds are wasted. People will actually take what they are given since they have paid for it. **tin hat on** "

"Any post now the 'if you don't support Separation, you're not a real Scot' accusations will start. The Nats have no answers. If an independent think tank points out the flaws in their plans, they're biased. All we're told is 'Don't worry your little head about that. It'll be alright on the night'. It won't. The Nats insist it's impossible to predict what'll happen in 3 or 5 or 10 or 50 years time, yet fail to mention that, in the unlikely event of Separation, it'll be forever. A one way street. No going back. Off the cliff without a 'chute." more soundbites explain how the IFS report can be independant when they recieved a brief from the OBR which is a branch of the treasury !! Answers should not only be easy - they should be honest and accurate. The answer (above) about global media and marketing is neither. In Ireland, specifically, their young folk are deserting the country in droves because their economy, despite Salmond's famous "Arc of Prosperity" is on the skids. Since the onset of the economic crisis in 2008, more than 200,000 Irish people have moved abroad. They are brothers, sisters, sons and daughters, highly qualified graduates, out-of-work labourers, farmers or IT technicians.

I am asking you if you can provide any comparison with successful economies. In other words how many of their young people also choose to go live and work elsewhere in the world, this would provide perspective on the irish figures. My advice _nny stop believing one side of the argument just because you dont like or agree with the other. Open yourself up to all information sources and question all of them. Everyone have a vested interest in the result of the referendum and most politicians will do whatever they can to get their desired result. as will the media and business interests.

Feel free to choose whichever nations you choose the same point of comparison to provide perspective applies. this is too complex and too important a decision for anyone to simply draw a line in the sand and say im on this side no matter what so there. But i will leave you with one final thought, the last time we had a referendum on independance in the late 70s. Westminster took their revenge, scotlands industry, education and social structures were ravaged and its only now that we are starting to recover. Do you want to risk that again. think about whether you want to put your faith in the politicians who look to westminster for everything including to ask what opinion they should have. but i think i already know the answer to that.

"I don't smoke. But a pack of fags costs nearly a tenner and people pay it. ...even though they will at some point fucking kill you. Everybody dies wheather they smoke or not so does it really make any difference? Yes. Smokers die sooner and at greater cost to the NHS. " The government loves smokers; they can tax them to buy tobacco and the income from this exceeds the cost of hospital treatments (I will dig out the figures later) and, because smokers usually die earlier than non-smokers, the government and pension providers pay out significantly less in pensions. It's a win-win situation for everybody except the smoker themselves. Doctor Nasty
