Woman's Hour is discussing the rise in cosmetic surgery on female genitalia.

Some of the derogatory terms used on here and threads about 'untidy' genitals would appear to support the view that this is because women are being made to feel abnormal. plus porn images.

They are also discussing that this insecurity is now leading to children and teenagers presenting for genital cosmetic surgery.

Is this another form of FGM but self inflicted by dysmorphia?

I feel sorry for young people who are made to feel like freaks, i used to feel ashamed of my body when i was young, mainly because of my mum and much older sister, who were very critical, especialy my older sister who was uptight and had a lot of hangups about sex and was obsesed with looks.

I used to read a lot of magazines and books, as i got older i realised it wasnt me who had the problem, it was them.

Everyone is different, there's no rule on what people should look like, whether their faces or their genitalia.

Difference is good and should be celebrated!

Of course there will be personal preferences, but nobody should feel like undergoing surgery to conform to standards set by society or media.

Unfortunately, our society has created so much pressure on women that we see an increase in cosmetic surgery of all types. Not many men feel insecure about their looks, and I haven't ever heard about anyone wanting cosmetic surgery because their penis is 'untidy'.

Although young men are now reporting more body dysmorphia and an increase in anorexia.

Not expert enough about anatomy or religious 'rules'. But are these cosmetic modifications similar to the female circumcision conducted by some religions?

Yes woman's hour was all about females and sadly very young girls confirming to unrealistic images presented in the media. Shame.

Only experience I have is when I get lucky and has always been nothing other than perfect

FGM is performed on very young girls without their understanding or consent, using razors and no anaesthesia. This is different in that it is people making an 'informed' choice and performed by qualified surgeons.

I saw a programme about it a while back and the girl wasn't happy with her labia and had them 'trimmed' I watched the whole thing through my fingers it was horrific!!! I decided there and then that even if mine hung to my knees I wouldn't put myself through that. (And I've had cosmetic surgery so I'm not anti surgery itself just that looked bloody awful!!!)

i watched a program years ago about a woman who didnt like the way her fanny looked after having a baby so she went to america to have it done, she said afterwards it was more painful than what she thought it would be, well i should think it would be.

I guess the trimming of labia is instigated by the curse of the porn sites.

You have to look a certain way in order to be allowed to perform. Who makes up those rules? The majority will be males, but nowadays there are also women who produce those movies.

As for my own awareness of the natural diversity of vulvae - it was on Embarrassing Bodies I think the I first saw a wall of vulvas.
