Hi all

My 12 year old step daughter is at that age where she is starting to get into wearing makeup.

What we would like to know is we want to get her a makeup set but we dont have a lot of money to spend so where can we get a tidy makeup set from and how much would we be looking at.

My daughter's first makeup set was Argos I think, not in a box though they we're dearer but in a compartment type with plastic slide on lid but that was ten years ago.

think it says more about you that you can't separate a discussion about make up sets for a child and inappropriate discussions about children on a sex site to be honest.

Word of warning when buying make up from pound shop....some of the make up has been discontinued and some a few years ago so some of it is very much out of date...some come from aboard as well so just be cautious when buying make up products from pound shops...

Lots of places do great make up sets for under a tenner...also consider her skin is still young so try getting make up that's not so harsh on the skin...

Yes go in and ask questions about what products will work for her skin etc...a larger boots is probably the best place to go...

You're welcome, what products are you thinking of getting her? It might be an idea to give her eye makeup remover, cleanser and moisturiser too so she gets into good habits early not like me lol

my daughter is 18 now....n i always went to boots for make up for her. no 7 have some good deals on esp now as they have free gifts when you buy two things. so many other good deals as well....ie soap n glory

also as an earlier post mentions be careful what you get, as too cheap can irratate young skin. enjoy shopping around, im sure she will love her treats....wish my daughter was 12 again xx

because I do care about children, and have spent a life time picking up the pieces of the damage that comes from denying children a childhood.

Hi I am a make up artist and Beauty teacher,

and frankly could not agree more! the age for girls getting spray tanned is ridicules! it is about managing there self development and making them comfortable in there own skin not bombarding them with adult quick fix attitudes.

I have even been asked for eyelash extensions for a 14 year old!!! however if it was a case of them actually (needing waxing) then waxing is better than shaving (mainly as it comes back slower and the hair is thinner) and hopefully don't scar legs with shavers! however there should be official guidelines really plus letting them wear make up when soooo young could lead to morfic body disorder! sorry a bit of a rant from me to lol

That's nothing to do with women wearing makeup.

That's about responsible parenting and the damage the media can do, amongst other things.

Makeup does not give young women image problems and it's quite possible for parents to allow the use of makeup for children AND support them to have a good self image.

This raises interesting points I don't think a little make up for a twelve year old is equal to being denied a childhood, I started wearing garish green eyeshadow the Christmas that I was 11 and it was because I really wanted to, I had started to leave childhood behind and was learning to be a woman, the ethics and social pressures behind women wanting to wear makeup aside I see no harm in it now or 46 years ago when it was me. Waxing and hair removal is another story but just read the venom directed at women with body hair and see why anyone might feel they need to remove it.

yes i agree children should be children for as long as they can but if their mates are wearing make up and the beauty industry are allowing their mates to get tans and waxed and plucked etc would you not be doing more harm by potentially allowing them to be bullied?

make up isnt expensive these days so if they dont go out and look at the quality of stuff she is etting she will just buy it herself and ut t on on the way to school etc.

There is a fine line in most things when it comes to parenting.

12 year olds all differ in their level of maturity. It's possible to wear makeup in a subtle way without looking like one is off to walk the streets. There's no harm in experimenting with makeup at 12.

Makeup does not cause self image issues. If you want to protect young women, campaign against the unhealthy effects of media on self image.

Depends on the school and how subtle the makeup is.

Officially they probably all say no but children do, and always have done, things at school that they shouldn't.

I would have got away with it at my school at 12, if subtle.

Ive worn makeup since I was 14, as all my friends were. no foundation but blusher eyeshadow etc. Now I wear the full lot, foundation etc. I love my lippy its my favourite part of my makeup, got lots of them, different colours. I wear it every day, all day and top up inbetween. Not so much weekends at home, am sat here now looking pale and awful lol

Im sure they do items for less than £1 and have a 'reduced' section, well unless it has any 1D stuff on.

When I was growing up we had girls world and other make up sets, little girls will always want to mimic older women especially ones they want to be like, I see no harm in wearing eye make up or lipstick but when it gets into foundations it is a bit to strong for young skin.

But generations are maturing at a younger age now, at twelve I was still playing with my baby doll and barbies but now a days 12 year olds have real babies it is just what society sees it to be except able in most cases.

I think it is very nurturing that you are seeking advice on this

My daughter started wearing make up at 12 yrs. Now at 15 she wears less but says it boosted her confidence.

Some of the large Primark stores sell make up (mascara for £1) and nice little make up bags and mirrors. X
