She owns a lot of media (her own production company, publishing etc.) and has a lot of money. She is very popular and that has meant she has a a huge following and is therefore influential. She gives a lot of her money to charities, particularly for girls and schools that has its own influence.

I like her. She puts her money where her mouth is - although I know a lot of people do this without getting quite as much publicity - but she's obviously a very powerful and influential woman in certain circles. Good luck to her I say.

Though Im getting a bit fed up of seeing her this week to be honest.

They are good. I'd like to rummage around her shoe collection.

I know you don't like them but she is also responsible for the FitFlop taking off. South Bank Uni had developed the "wobble board" technology for shoes and it was a really low take up until Oprah wore a pair and said they were the most comfortable shoes ever.

I like her , used to like her show although it got a bit samey in the end. But without her her there would be no Rickey Lake , Gerry Springer et al. She was the original and I think still the best. Colour purple was a great film and I'm looking forward to the new one.

It's not an English word but Rita Ora has it as a last name and kia ora is a Mauri greeting which means "be well" and gets used to mean hello.

I saw some hard hitting Oprah shows in the earlier days but with her daytime slot and audience demographic she gave the audience what they wanted. The giveaways were clever marketing and product placements. Which company wouldn't want their product "given away" by Oprah? That's like a Which? seal of approval without all of that pesky testing and accreditation.

cant argue with her acting though. she was great in color purple. danny glover was stand out aswell

oprah has many positive qualities and in many ways is a good role model, but ( theres always a but ) she is reputed to be a member of the bilderberg group which makes me suspicious of what goes on behind closed doors.

She was smart enough to see a gap in the us chatshow market (it use to go out in a dead slot between the afternoon soaps and gameshows and the local evening news)

She was smart enough to own the production company that makes the show... Harpo

She was smart enough to get ABC to syndicate the show....

She was then smart enough to get other shows she produced syndicated I.e dr Phil

I think she was the first talk show host to let people into her life so they felt like they knew her... So talking about the sexual abuse she suffered... And the weight gains/losses ect ect...

And because of the acting background she could get guests no one else could....

All of that no equals own tv network.... Called OWN

She might be better equipped to recognise it for what it is than those of us who will never experience it. Racism is more prolific than Caucasians are probably aware of. As for Oprah being over-sensitive in that respect, I don't think so. She has enough perception, experience, and brains not to overreact as that can damage her career that she worked so hard for.

she is also a fantastic actress who knows how to manipulate and behave in a machiavelian manner, dont look at the ripples on the surface of the water stick head under and see whats causing them.

I have my issues with the movie, but there's no way i can begrudge her the success she has worked bloody hard for. Especially as a prominent woman of colour in the media landscape.

Even in her less stellar moments, she's a role model to many, and has the power to bring about a lot of meaningful change.
