The Government has been trying to be seen as the friend of the common man when it comes to death duties and the zero rate band for married couples COULD be as much as £650,000 now with proper planning. This was partly done to counter the tories proposition that they'd raise the zero rate to a million pounds.

Then labour had considered a death duty at a flat rate of £20,000 to be levied against ALL estates to pay for care after it was branded a death tax.

However, Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary has made it clear that a levy of 10% on all estates is still an option under active consideration in order to pay for the National Care Service

Governments needs to realise that they exisrt to serve the people, not the other way round. A man pays into the system all his life and rightly so - he enjoys the benefits of state services, protection and healthcare the same as anyone else, but when he dies his obligation to the state ends at that point. Whatever he has amassed in his life should go directly to those he leaves behind. Not the state.
