Fifty years ago you'd hardly ever see someone with a mental illness out and about; they were locked away in Victorian-style asylums. Today, in South London, almost 10 times more patients are cared for in their homes than in hospital.

It's better known as care in the community but our perception of whether it works is often coloured by isolated stories about schizophrenics who have killed. The reality is different.

Cameras follow a community mental health team in the Borough of Lewisham. If they can keep their patients well and stable, they will stay out of psychiatric hospital and enjoy their independence.

I see this last night and can't help thinking people who care for the mental health of others it must be hard work as they never know what they may face day today and what special people they are to handle and deal with it .I love to think more are living normal lives and not locked away. I am glad we get to see things like this on tv too as it makes you see how life is for some people.

I work in mental health for years...its emotionally draining yet rewarding when things go right. However i was stalked attacked with a piece of wood with nails and abused verbally and had sexual harassment on a daily basis....loved the time i did but i would never go back into it.

yes made me see last night looking at that .. You just never know how you will find people as thay change so much and very big highs and lows and when on their drugs thay change its a risky job and as I say take very special people to cope with it.

I watched it last night too.

I am full of admiration for the people who spend their lives looking after people even when they go off their meds. To see people get back on track because of your actions and interventions must be extremely satisfying. But my god, how dedicated are these people??

yes very dedicated and very special people too. I too am full of admiration for them who work with people like this and it must be satisfying to see thay help in some way to make there life better . I am glad we get to see things like this on TV as it really do open your eyes into how some live .
