What do they REALLY signify?

Wealth?

Love?

Investment?

Arms?

War?

Though most of my jewelry has sentimental associations having a couple of pieces that will always be worth something if you need to cash them in can be handy.

Funky Monkey - Conflict Diamonds / Blood Diamonds

Not sure about investment, as like precious metals the prices are pretty dam rubbish and the few companies out there, although they have plenty of stuck to go around (which would bring the prices down), they control flow creating demand and hike prices.

Unless it's a VERY rare bit of stone, anything else is just below market value on resale.

For me any piece of jewellery has an emotional attachment. It is like a snapshot in time as to where and when it was bought or given.

The actual monetary value is irrelevant to me.

by coincidence, I had to sell my mums diamond/ gold ring at an auction last sat, it got me out of a hole, and when I get the money, it will be used to pay for my winter heating, save burning the furniture!

I wish more people saw things that way.

Huge quantities of beautiful jewellery and silver have been scrapped and melted recently because of the hike in bullion prices.

That mainly due to the turn in economy, not, not much money going around for some people and the low prices for metals. The buyers are on a winner. Long term the metals will go back up

Diamonds and gemstones are not good for investment unless they are above a certain size.

I learnt that from bitter experiences trying to sell some of my jewellery in the past.

Waste of money to me. Fake ones are just as pretty. I've seen jewellery in shops at obscene prices. Even if I was a multi millionnaire I wouldn't buy it.

I'm probably one of those rare guys that own diamond rings. I have 3 each one half a carat I wear together on my little finger.I'm lucky to have quite slender hands. Two are white diamonds one champagne. All my life I lusted for them n at last I found myself in a position to buy them. Shallow it may be but they give me enormous pleasure

They are known as blood diamonds and illegal in some countries

There is something called 'mind clean' mentality, in that the wearer knows he/she is wearing the real thing of certain quality, even when it is not obvious to others.

I wear a mixture of real and fake jewellery on regular basis.

For smaller stones, it is not easy to distinguish between fake and real ones.

For larger stones, they can look pastry and dull compared to real ones.

Truth is diamonds are running out and value is rising so they are a good investment. Countries that have banned blood diamonds are thinking of lifting the ban to raise ssles and lower the price. This I think is wrong and should not happen
