"Don't restrict to one uni......... They all have differing requirements- Aberdeen is a great place, for example and their unit has a fab reputation Best of luck S" If the process is the same as when I applied you can only accept one offer and one backup place to pursue. If you fail to get in to either there's the clearing process.

It seems like a million years or so ago! I know I applied to several but now you mention it I can't remember when I had to decide which I wanted to stick with. I feel old again now

"I'd encourage her to think about transferable skills that she's gained from uni/college. Communication skills, organisation, ability to work in a team. Do not under any circumstances say that she wants to be a midwife because she loves babies! The interviewers will be looking for answers along the lines that they wish to provide women centred care, they are interested in the role midwives have in public health which can make a massive difference to individual, community and population health. The biggest is breast feeding but smoking cessation, healthy start ,vitamin supplementation all come into it. I'd pick one topic that she knows a lot about and talk about it. There are various NICE guidelines related to midwifery care if you google. Also general NHS issues such as the Francis report related to the Mid Staffs issues and whistleblowing. They want to know you have some knowledge of broader NHS issues and won't be complicit in abuse. They usually ask some general uni/study questions so if your daughter is able to demonstrate that she is organised, proactive etc and furnish her answers with appropriate examples that would be good. An example of how she has overcome a difficulty whilst studying shows determination. I failed maths twice and eventually came out with a "B" as I found my ideal learning style. PM me if you need any help. Although there is a national shortage of midwives there aren't enough training places so if your daughter is unsuccessful make sure she seeks feedback and reapplies x" This is absolutely brilliant advice

"Thank you everyone for such fantastic advice. My daughter has been reading up on lots of topics and has really researched home births and breastfeeding as her main topics that she can talk about in depth and I have also spoke to her about the normal births are not the norm and being able to adapt to situations of difficult or complicated pregnancy and birth ... she also has a great understanding that midwifery is not all about babies but about woman centered care... have took notes from all of your mails and suggestions to show her ... now I have to tell her where I got the info from as think might be a bit much if I tell her I got it from my friends on fab swingers lol ... thanks again everyone xx will post back and let you know how it goes xxx " She sounds very well prepared. Let us know how she's got on X

"Just thought I would drop in amd let you all know .... that she got on really well and feels confident. We now have to wait 2-3 weeks to see if she was successful. I must thank you all again . She used a lot of your suggestions and said she got lots of approving nods ... so thank you all once again ... I am so proud of her xxx "

"Well I said I would keep you all updated ... sadly my my daughter received a rejection email to day . She is very down and not feeling very positive .. I feel so bad as she really did her research and prepared well ... I just dont know what to say to her to get her feeling positive again .. But once again thank you all for your advice and thoughts xxx " As was said further up, the country may be crying out for midwives but training places are so very few. Tell your daughter not to be downhearted , she will get there eventually. My daughter got her uni place last year but she told me there are GP's and other medical professionals waiting to take places on midwifery degrees too.
