"I have looked into all of these fads ... the only one that has ever worked for me properly is the .... Eat less and exercise one" The only effective way to reduce your weight is to burn off more calaries than you take in. Eat a healthy balanced diet - 5 fruit and veg per day, and exercise every day. I had to really struggle into my favourite dress on sat night - time for the 'now 'til Christmas' diet I think!

"Is this the same as the 5/2 diet? I have seen friends lose weight steadily doing 5/2 but I haven't made it work for me yet. " Not sure, I bought the Dukan book off Amazon for a quid but haven't read it yet. It's a phased thing - hi protein to start with, then more veg added back in, then limited starches two days a week I think, so that might be it?? It's lower fat than Atkins which is the only thing that worked for me before.

How do you know if you're insulin resistant...I'm assuming that's different to being diabetic or is it the same thing?

" Diabetes is the end result sometimes - Type II is severe insulin resistance, which may develop after years of a milder, gradually worsening problem. You can go a fair way to suspecting/deducing it if you have some of the associated symptoms which can range from vague things like craving for carbs, symptoms after eating carbs, weight gain especially around the midsection, up to quantifyable high cholesterol, raised blood pressure, atherosclerosis associated with Metabolic Syndrome. It's a huge subject that warrants some research.

We all remember the Atkins diet being in fashion a few years ago, but like all these other fads, it faded out when people noticed that they weren't experiencing all of the benefits of reduced weight ie. greater vitality and higher self esteem that come from eating good food and getting their systems moving by exercise. Please all, let's stick to what has been medically proven throughout centuries

Ignore the 'epidemic' of obesity and diabetes that has come about through the application of accepted 'proven' knowledge?? Clearly there is a problem with that. As for Atkins, when I lost a bunch of weight and improved ALL the perameters measured using it, my GP was fully supportive as she and her consultant father had seen consistent positive results with it's use. I was amused to see on TV one day a documentary featuring a surgeon who specialised in gastric banding, called something like Dr Simple. He said the diet he recommends is Simple - 'just avoid beige food'. Love it. (beige being bread, cakes, biscuits, pasta, potatoes, flour, sugars - aka high carb foods). Factors such as the Glycaemic index should not be underestimated, the research is sound.
