Charity begins with people who are suffering in terrible situations, in conditions I can not begin to imagine.

I give a little to help.

Charity begins when those in need receive unconditional support provided by the kind-hearted actions of those in a fortunate position of being able to offer comparison and help.

Not at all . It's the choice of the person donating or giving help where it is received

I agree with o p to a degree. Its awful whats happened in the phillipines and count my blessings but its not so much the fact we are giving millions to help others abroad but we find money we are told we as nation we do not have.

Folk in uk are told to tighten our belts etc some have to decide whether to heat or eat surely this should be priority above other nations needs.

I am in favour of overseas aid but not if we have folk here in uk need help first.

If time comes the official line is we are financially better off then and only then should extra money go abroad.

As for india for years we gave them milliions in aid and now they send rockets to space just shows how little of the money is used to aid their poor.

Yes there will be incidents like in phillipines where genuine help is needed but aid to nations generally should more or less cease until uk folk are helped more and once standard of living is raised then consider aid abroad.

Worryingly for me is government have tried to put in law a guaranteed percentage of gdp to go in overseas aid shame that intsead of political posturing on world stage its not made law that all and i mean all folk are not given the living wage. Either we have money or we do not it is that simple.

OK, so lets take a scenario here (one which I really hope never ever happens) a huge storm batters Britain, the infrastructure is damaged, there is not enough food to go around, thousands of people are dead and even more are injured.

And all the countries in the world have adopted the OP's _iews and we are fucked. Children are dying, disease starts to spread. We are an island and no one comes to help. Sounds pretty terrifying doesn't it?

Because that's the repercussions of the world adopting the OP's _iew. We are left, stranded, dying... And no one comes to help because no one has donated money to charities that help around the world.

Are you seriously believing its ok to let folk struggle to heat or eat for example here yet spend millions on countries who can afford nuclear weapons yet keep their own folk in poverty i think you need a reality check.

Lets say for example an elderly relative is one who says they cant afford to heat their home or eat properly and become ill as result and you hear of say pakistan getting another shed load of dosh to prop up their government would you say to relative hey stop moaning.

As said before if we can send millions abroad why the hell cant heating bills be subsidised.

Winter Fuel Allowance? I was sure that was a UK policy.

I do sometimes wonder if aliens ever find us what they will think about the fact that there are imaginary lines on the planet that make us dislike each other and not help each other. Its madness...

Plus the Government have paid many millions for insulating homes, lifts and cavity walls.

In a sense you are right, we should look after our own, but right now we are not the victims of a natural disaster are we?

And by helping those in need, no matter where they are geographically placed, we are helping our own, our own human race.

How much do you think the UK spends on its nuclear arsenal while people choose between heating and eating?

I am not getting in to a racist debate. That is precisely what the purpose of the thread is. And no doubt lots will jump all over this post claiming vociferously that it's not. But it is. Anyone with half an ounce of sense can see it.

You argue that charity begins at home, then ironically use an hypothetical example of a family member that you expect the government to help out rather than you personally...
