My taste is more Jethro Tull and Steeleye Span with some Judy Tzuke thrown in and of course a big side helping of the Floyd! LoL

They played 'distant drums' at a close relatives funeral. I can't bear to hear that song anymore. It's a pity because my late Father used to sing it me to get me to sleep so before that I had fond memories of it.

Not really a fan of straight up country, too sentimental for me. I have to make an exception for Johnny Cash though, the man was a genius.

I quite like some 'alt' country though; The Handsome Family have done some good stuff, and David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower / Wovenhand) is a brilliant musician, albeit he seems like a total wanker in person...

Personally, I hate the very corporpate, commercial, often right wing and patriotic mainstream country that Nashville pumps out. I'm afraid I'd include Garth Brooks in that - but that's only my opinion.

The best country had/has real heart and soul though. The guy who changed my mind about country was Gram Parsons - beautiful singer and writer. Don't listen to the faster stuff much, but by god the ballads are great. Check out A Song for You, She and $1000 Dollar Wedding - beautiful, soulful stuff.

The person who's around now who's utterly fabulous is Gillian Welch. Such a great songwriter and her guitar playing partner Dave Rawlings is a brilliant guitar player. All her albums are great, but particularly love Time (The Revelator) and the Harrow and the Harvest.

The other guy I love is Townes Van Zandt. Maybe not "pure country", but lovely songs. Watch the YouTube clip of him singing Waiting to Die from Heartworn Highways.

Again not pure country, but the other singer I like is Bobby Gentry. Came from the south and her songs are soaked with the spirit of that place.

Speaking of which, if you want to see a great, quixotic film about the south, check Jim White (who is also a great songwriter)'s Searching for a Wrong Eyed Jesus. Kinda a road movie of him mooching around the region and meeting lots of great, strange musicians (not all country) and characters.

Yes, a lot of people forget that Dolly wrote some great songs. I suppose there are a couple of reasons for that

Although I find a lot of country as "pass the sickbag" music, there have been some great musicians, singers, and songwriters from the genre.

Dolly (of course) Johnny Cash, Kristofferson, I just loved Sunday Morning Coming Down, Willie Nelson, and Glen Campbell, are all greats, and Garth Brooks has written some good songs as well.

Went to see Johnny Cash at wembley when I was about 12 with my parents and he has remained a firm favourite ever since.

John Fogertys attempts at country are very good.

Uncle Kracker knocks out a good tune.

Kid Rock did a country album a couple of years ago and that was excellent.

My all time favourite country song though is In Spite Of Ourselves by John Prine and Iris Dement.

Steve Earle, because he always attempts something a little different, rather than the mawkish, AOR, right wing, flag waving, tub thumping shite that masquerades as mainstream country music these days.

The Zac Brown Band are fantastic live (their Kashmir/Devil Went Down to Georgia medley was possibly the best thing I saw live this year) but their records are dreadful and I would rather eat my own liver than ever have to listen to another Shania Twain song in my life!

Phantom Limb (a country/southern soul band from Bristol) are also brilliant but they've just split up.

My all time fav two bands are a band from Missouri called the Bottle Rockets and one from Georgia called Drive by Truckers. Great 'new' country with a bit of rock n roll in there too. Some would call it alternative country.

"Hollywood Town Hall by the Jayhawks is a cracking alt country album"

Probably the second or third alt country record I ever bought. Uncle tupelo anodyne was first then bottle rockets first record.

Concur with DBTs live. Incredible. Should get the documentary on them off iTunes, that's well worth the few quid.

That's really nice, good gospel feel to it. Actually reminded me of a slowed down version of the opener on DBTs 'big to to'.

West Wales and Cardiff

Yeah, I've loved that version for years!

I saw GW in Bristol a couple of years back. Easily one of the best gigs I've ever been too.

"Confederate Railroad - a band, I know, but I do like them.

I do have a lot of nice things to say about Dolly Parton, too "

I lot of nice things - or just a couple of major points?
