As knife crime is such a large problem in this country....

Why do knives need to have a pointed end at all?? why not blunt or round at the end, after all, how often do you Stab your loaf of bread etc???

Sure knives could still be used to slash, but would make it harder to stab somebody....

Surely it would reduce deaths.

A knife is not a weapon, its a tool....

But anything can be used as a weapon.....the reduction of knife/gun crimes will never be achieved by removing or adapting everyday objects to suit the few

People have to be taught how to vent frustrations and anger in a more productive way, equip them with the knowledge and skills that enable them to make better choices!

Lets ban ball point pens as well as pencils, needles, pointy rocks, while we are at it lets make glass unbreakable, so no pointy edges.

Oh and forks, they can be used to stab things, so lets get rid of those as well.

Oh you make me feel so stupid now. Doh!!

I KNOW it would not stop everything, but many "anger crimes" occur when a knife is THRUST in anger, a blunt end would do less damage..... I would save MOST stabbings were made with a forward Thrust Motion..... rather than a hacking....

But I bet some will disagree....

For many years the only knife I have used in the kitchen is a Kitchen Devil that has an approx 100mm serrated (very small teeth) blade with a rounded end. It cuts and slices vegetables...bread...meat...there has never been an occasion when I've needed a point on a knife....can anyone think of one?

What would you do with a ripe tomato though if you couldn't pierce it first you would just squash it unless your knife was really sharp.

I think baseball bats should be made from honeycomb. That would save a few broken legs.

I also use one to stab sausages rather than a fork as when the cook the wholes stay smaller then.

Same when Im testing to see if meat is cooked (clear juices etc) as you get a better result than using a fork

The problem is not the knife but the idiots using it as a weapon.

The law needs to be toughened up, anyone carrying a knife without a valid reason, should be given 5 years imprisonment and serve five years.

Same as guns, which should be 10 years.

I know a lot of people will go on about human rights etc., but we are all for metal detectors in the high street.

Only the guilty have something to hide.

The whole point of having a point on a knife is to reduce accidents in the kitchen. They are to stop the knife sliding about when starting a cut or slice. Imagine for example, trying to cut a face out of pumpkin with a blunt ended knife!

To add to this:

Your supposed to put the point of the knife into the chopping board and slide the food under it as you chop downwards.

Serrated knives such as Kitchen Devils and Ginsu's are terrible for speed chopping or preparing fresh meat (they tear as opposed to cut), also if you're slashed with one the wound is far harder to clean and stitch than if it was done with a straight blade.

The simple answer is that if you use a knife as an offensive weapon to cause someone permanent injury, disfigurement or harm the minimum sentence should be 10 years.

I agree but blunting the tip of all knives is like saying all men on here are timewasters!

Yes, there are some morons who use a knife as an offensive weapon but I think you'll find a majority of the population can be trusted with such a simple tool. I'm still trying to imagine how I could use a blunt tipped knife when out shooting or seeing a fishmonger open the belly of a fish with anything quite so useless.
