I hate my real name, always have.

Ben, is a my alter ego for the swinging scene, but I kinda like it. I think it suits me better than my real name.

I like my real name, it is exotic and unexpected, I can't think of a name I'd rather have. I always tell people my real name when I meet them but only when I meet them.

You don't like your first name but you changed your middle name?

I wouldn't change it now. I'm funny about changing names - I think they are telling and it's part of the life thing how well you wear your name. Even when it's ridiculous.

Changing a middle name was not a real problem, but I could imagine changing my first name would cause all sorts of nightmares!

As a TV you get a chance to have a name you really like, my ex called Katie "Katie" and it stuck even after we split, I would have probably called my alter ego Jenny , don't know why just like the name, feminine and flirty or maybe cos I fancied a jenny at school ....... But even though I can change katie anytime to anything "she" seems to have been around that long now as Katie she might as well stay so guess Katie is in the same position, maybe called something else if not named by someone else......... If that makes sense.

Maybe kids should be allowed to have a 'chosen' name, perhaps when they're almost teenagers.

That way they'd have their given name, their family/ surname and one they chose for themselves.

That's quite an ancient ritual for many cultures anyway to some extent. A coming of age name.

Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

Apparently I was going to be an Abigail, but when I arrived didn't look like one (however that works!) so was named Carolyn...however when I was 8 my school teacher gave me a nickname based on my last name because there were two Carolyns in the class and I've been known by that monicker ever since - I reckon it suits me

If I'd named myself, I'd probably have gone for something like Althea, Tricia or Cassandra - all names I like but probably still have ended up with my current nickname
