Debenhams is to break the long standing industry tradition of size 10 clothes mannequins in their shops n will now include size 16.

The 'average' female size has risen in a decade from a 12 to a 14.

They say the new dummies will more accurately reflect the modern woman.

Good idea??

I think dummies should reflect the size of the women they are selling the clothes to, I've seen it in the past when they have plus sized cloths on small manikins and pinned at the back, if your a shop that sells plus sized cloths display them on plus sized manikins, women want to see what they will look like on them not someone 5 sizes smaller

To pan out the debate - a woman spoke AGAINST the idea on the basis that 'larger' women would prefer to see clothes displayed on a 10 model because there is an element of fantasy in clothes buying n women like to 'think' they'll look the same in the outfit as the model.

(this isn't my opinion I'm merely repeating from the radio programme - so PLEASE don't shoot me )

I agree. Don't M&S have a wide range of models in their ad campaigns? Don't see why shop mannequins can't be the same, varied sizes will reflect society x

there could be a lot of truth in that with some women, personally if I see someone who's a size 10 in something I like I know i'm not going to look the same it in

Marilyn Monroe was a size 18 and she was way sexyer then all this models size 0

Real women do not and won't ever look like mannequins regardless of what size they make them in the shops

I do agree with them making them little larger though to give a more accurate reflection on womens sizes changing

That's not true according to most articles online and even one book written by her dressmaker she ranged from 8.5 stone to 10 stone max and a size 12. She may of been a 16 in American sizes.

you've only got to google image her to see she was no way a size 18, not even in US sizes was she a size 18

Why do people roll out the Marilyn myth? I've seen some of her clothes and she was tiny.

I think shop dummies should represent the clothes they're selling. If the market is bigger people surely those people want to see which clothes look good on them.

You'd think the sensible thing would be to have a range of sizes.

I'm in the middle on this one.

Personally I don't really pay attention to the way something looks on a mannequin because I know for a fact it won't look the same on me. Am I bothered by it? Not really. I can see why some welcome this move but at the end of the day if you don't know the fashion industry manipulates things to make their stuff look good maybe you shouldn't be allowed out on your own.

I do see the argument for them condoning being overweight as well though.
