It's yet another Americanism creeping into mainstream English, and is a grammatical disaster, which is why it is so annoying. We hate it too, along with most Americanisms.

I always laugh when people say "touch base" and then tell them they sound ridiculous,I can't help it

It was the same when people were looking for a "window" to fit meetings into......stoopid sayings
