I tend to specify by saying Far East Asian, but agree that the general use of "Asian", especially in the UK is pretty lazy.

Sidenote, this thread should be interesting. I have a theory on why there aren't that many from the Orient on here, but it might get some all bristled (inevitably) so i'll refrain for now.

I believe a lot of it is to do with the cultural honour code deeply ingrained in those from that region of the world. Most actions tend to have far reaching repurcussions, especially on a family level.

A promiscuous nature and/ or adultery is one of those actions that is heavily frowned upon by oriental cultures and can bring great shame to the families of those who get exposed.

The ones that do indulge are extremely hush hush, and mostly operate in the underground scene. Does swinging take place there? Sure thing. But it is mostly old school; via word of mouth and very strict house parties. Definitely not as open, or as online as western cultures.

The above comes mostly from chats with a korean girl i dated a few years back. You can further extrapolate from there if you wish.

Well I'm not meaning to cause you any offense as I love the Orient, I've visited China, and I have a number of great Far East Asian friends, my ex was Chinese etc I also refer to oriental region prople as Far East Asia (as I do also see the problem with Asia being too big an area, like the previous poster) ...I was told Oriental was incorrect and I try to respect others cultures in this way, so that's why I no longer use the term oriental...if you prefer to be called oriental that's fine, thats your perogative, but I'm not about to start insulting the large number of Far East Asian people who find it a derogatory term.

Here is the urban dictionary definition:

'1. oriental

Politically incorrect term used in place of "Asian." Correct usage should be an adjective for things like inanimate objects, not humans.

Correct usage: There's an Oriental rug store on Derbe Drive.

Are you going to the Oriental market?

Incorrect usage: Is that dude oriental?

I respect your view, but my apologise if my humble opinion is different and that I try to respect the Far East culture and traditions that I love by respecting what is deemed politically correct, I have no idea how many Far Eastern people prefer to be referred to oriental or Asian there will be people on both sides of the coin, but if I use the term Oriental Girl many could accuse me of being racist, which I'm not...if I use the term Asian or Far East Asian Girl at least I shouldn't be accused of racism that's just my humble opinion though

You are most welcome, as I say no offence meant, well my ex was Chinese but British Born so westernised, probably why the politically correct issue was big with her, but like you say probably not such an issue in China...Shangai was where I visited in China, absolutely loved it there...I've always had a big love and fascination with Chinese Culture which is why I've done Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Lion Dance for 22yrs ...I used to learn mandarin and even calligraphy but I don't remember much these days...Ni Hao

A quick check of Wikipedia states that according to the 2011 census, just 0.7% of the UK population hails from China, I'm not sure about the rest of the Far East.

Basically, that's just one person in every 200.

I agree!! I work in an asian community...but this mainly consists of pakistani, indian n middle east asian. Unless u call them by their country...do they have an alternative collective name? Orient is the most obvious for collective name for 'far eastern' women...thats just my opinion

Orient means East as Occident means West. The Regional term was derived from relative relationship with Europe.

In any case my post was seriously tongue in cheek.

Like The North used to start at Potter's Bar (In the days when the A1 was supreme) whereas it now starts at Watford (courtesy Ernest Marples). The North also appears to resemble the end of the rainbow because wherever I am on the M1 I still cannot reach 'The North'. It just is.
