Does anyone know of any old remedies for tonsilitis, I'm taking antibiotics but can't get rid of the feeling that there's something stuck in my throat, serious remedies much appreciated

Genuine advice - ice cream as the cold reduces any swelling that makes you think there is something stuck at the back.

this might sound odd but if you can bear crisps eat some, teh salt soothes the pain and the abrasive nature of the crisps sloughs dead cells off, follow with ice cold drink sipped or as Aphrodite said ice cream.

If antibiotics aren't making you feel a bit better they might not be the correct ones fir this infection though

Hot drinks as hot as you can bear.

Honey is naturally soothing so I used to drink lemon and ginger tea with a slice of lemon and a spoonful of honey.

Also gargling with soluble paracetamol. Just make sure that you account for it in your painkiller tally and make sure you are not taking paracetamol in other remedies like lemsip.

Just keep an eye on how big your tonsils get as they can obstruct your airway if they swell too much.

Plain ice-cream. My sister had tonsillitis and the doctors recommended ice-cream.

Very valid point! Antibiotics should make you significantly better within a day or two - if they are the right ones! Maybe check with NHS direct?

Gargle with soluble aspirin to take down the swelling.

Then ice cream and regular fluids.

Should be 'Corsodyl' which is an antiseptic mouth wash.

I've suffered that something in the throat feeling recently with throat infections and found an anaesthetic throat spray was the only thing that dulled it. Was laying in bed trying not to panic, not a nice feeling.

Difflam is more effective and more palatable than Corsodyl. It comes in a mouthwash and also a throat spray.

a Jamaican friend of mine used to make what he called 'kill a germ joy juice' by boiling 4-5 chopped up garlic cloves and 2''root ginger in a cup of water to reduce it down for about 10 mins, then add honey to disguise the taste.

Drink warm.

Sounds disgusting but it works a treat! Keeps the vampires at bay too...

Difflam that's it I couldn't remember the name hence anaesthetic throat spray lol it's great stuff

Or more likely it was viral infection. Vast majority of tonsillitis is viral and GPs prescribe abs to appease patients. Just look at chief medical officers recent comments on antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Sore throat isn't the same as tonsillitis though. "

They are referring to the symptoms of tonsillitis. Read NICE guidelines. The use of antibiotics is for very rare cases/ conditions. Even if throat culture indicates bacterial tonsillitis the use of antibiotics doesn't affect recovery.

The majority of patients still want antibiotics for cold and flu symptoms. They are not clinically indicated but despite all the information out there patients bad mouth GPs when they refuse antibiotics.
