Well Mr. Buble aint trad - Acker Bilk is and to be honest as great as Buble is , he aint jazz.

I think there is a whole area of lovely jazz-tinged music - Buble, Melody Gardot, Madeleine Peyroux, Norah Jones etc. But it is not jazz

I hope that doesn't sound really snooty and dismissive

aaaah I thought you were linking trad and Buble but you were not of course.

I am more of into 1950's / 60s / 70s Miles David, John Coltrane, etc through to today's Bugge Weselltoft, and all sorts like acid jazz, Pretty much anything except freeform jazz, cannot abide someone playing 300 notes per second for 30 minutes x

I love jazz, in all its varieties... trad swing fusion....from instrumentalists Like Bix Beiderbecke, Dizzy Gillespie to vocalists like

Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald.... they all belong in the jazz genre.

I'm with you on that... and relevant others who played with Miles. Love a bit of Jaco Pastorious, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Yellowjackets... The list goes on and on, my favourite genre in general, but can't say I know all the classes of jazz, just know what I like!

It is 90 minutes from Exeter to me - I live at the end of the bloody world !

Well, until the end of this month when I am moving to around the Crewe area. So come April, the candles will be lit, Michael will be on the hifi and I will be upstairs waiting...

Excellent taste. I would add Marcus Miller - saw him in manchester at a sweaty nightclub a few years ago, incredible performance - switching between the bass and sax

Love jazz - seen most of the old men of jazz in the days when the Edinburgh Jazz festival was a jazz festival - yes it was a while ago

But how can you class Buble as jazz, in fact how can you class him as anything - he's a horrible singer, and his latest offering - jeeez

I remember the Chris Barber 50th Aniversary gig at the Whitley Bay Playhouse.

1st set had Lonnie Donnigan and Monty Sunshine - just as the band was when it started and the 2nd set was the band as it was today, with Pat Halcox on trumpet, John Slaughter on Bass - can still remember John slaughter's bass solo during 'Going down the river - Honey but I can't take you' - class

Oh and saw Humphrey Littelton and his band at Newbiggin Sports centre of all places - that was a fantastic night - what Humph didn't know about jazz wasn't worth knowing - sadly no longer with us

Then swqw Kenny Ball and his Jazz Men, cannot remember where that was but it was local then the night to top all nights - the one and only, Mr George Melley _ that was at some sports hall in Houghton le Spring .. he was fantastic, such a camp old bird he was, another great sadly no longer with us.

Is Acker still alive ? I know he was very ill a few years ago, but never hear anything about him now

We also have a couple of good local bands who do the rounds at our local jazz club, The River City Jazz men, and the Main Street Jazz Men - both good bands, been on the circuit for a lot of years - have had some damn good guests in the past too

Yep plenty of him as well... my brothers used to go yearly to the north sea jazz festival, and all these guys were playing. Think now it's got a bit crappy with more charty stuff which is annoying.

Yeah the big bands were something else ...

They just don't make music like that anymore

Above the Co-oP in Ashington there is, what was the Arcade ballroom in the 1940's, it's now used as a warehouse sadly.

But the parquet dance floor is still there, the shapes on the walls where the half moon shaped uplighters once were, the hook and beautiful plaster moulding on the ceiling where the mirror ball would have hung.

Even the bandstand is still there at the end of the room. When I worked for the Co-oP many moons ago, I was often up there and looked around, imagining going back to the 40's and listening to 'The Arcadians' dance band ..
