Alcoholic/Alcohol Dependant

To me, these almost seem the same thing.

We have a girl who HR have described as the latter as she drinks when she gets home (although she smells of alcohol the majority of time) - but apparently she's not an alcoholic.

She's a lovely girl so its nothing against her, but surely its one and the same???

Almost always. In 99% of cases, they overlap.

There are a few who are the latter, but don't descend into the former. Usually just one trigger away from it though.

I think it's like sexuality there are lots of shades

I have been a very regular drinker , but neither describe what I am. I don't need it. I'm not addicted to it. I function better without it. But I could easily settle into drinking regular bottle of wine maybe bottle and half every night. I believe there's a lot of other people like me.

My only direct experience of alcoholism is with a close family member and I would say that they are drink dependent. If there is a difference it is a small one.

I never considered myself alcoholic or alcohol dependent but when my counsellor asked me to talk about my drinking habits and nights out, he was horrified, even more so that I laughed at his reaction.

I only realised I had a problem when he asked me to give up drinking for the remainder of my course and it sent me near suicidal to go without.

These days I'm happy to go without drink but in moderation it's a great pleasure.

My sister has a bottle of wine or two with her other mummy friends every night and says it is a social thing , says it is to wind the day down but when we went away on holiday she couldn't stop even for a day but says it is no problem at all, maybe i am worried for nothing hopefully

Very true, i think a lot of women do this now, called wine-o-clock where they just see it as social drinking with other yummy mummies, me and my mum tell her all the time but she just thinks we are nagging her

Unfortunately everyone is a nag when you don't want to give up what you enjoy. I really miss a good drink but even if I could let myself, the resulting gastric problems would just kill me slowly. Always found it strange that some people thrive on drink.

I think CCK said it all. Go for as long as you can without it. The severity of the problem can be measured by the length of time it takes before you reach for the bottle. Weeks, days or hours?

People who know me know I enjoy a drink and was given a wake up call by a good friend who told me I was vile when d*unk...however I rarely drink during the week and trying to cut down a great deal...vodka is my vice. Do I consider I have an issue possibly but I am far from being dependant on it...I've grown up in a family where drinking (social) was the norm...I've got a few Danish relatives who have a major drink issue and it's sad to see them now...I used to work with alcoholics and saw the devastation of drink..live had an addiction and I know that I have an addictive personality so always wary of things that I do that may cause me to become addicted to it..

An alcoholic is dependent on drink to function, I have been around it my whole life and lost my dad, brother and two uncles through it!!

I myself have battled with it since I was 13, at the moment I am in control thankfully!

It is a disease as is drug addiction, it links up with depression and other mental health issues, as a recovering alcoholic myself, no matter how many people show concern it is only the addict who can admit they have a problem and deal with it with lots of support!

I had an ex who was an alcoholic ,she didn't think she had a problem until she started circling the drain ,thankfully she went to rehab for a month and as far as I know is still on the wagon.

She was a great girl but had 3 phases in a day,

1.hungover

2.great company (after hair of the dog)

3. Ass hole

I think the only differance between alcohol dependant and alcoholic is denial and acceptance.

I used to have a mother who was alcohol dependant.

I have studied alcoholism for 7years.

Being an alcoholic means that you can not function without alcohol in your system its all you think about day and night.

Alcohol dependency is basically when you can't go one whole day without a drink, but you can still go to work and do normal things.

Alcoholism is not a choice it is a mental and physical illness and trying to come off it yourself incorrectly can.lead to death.

With all due respect like I said, the same thing.

And you're right going from constant alcohol intake for a long period of time to 'cold turkey' can send your body into shock, seizures, and major organ failure!!!

Never recommended by any means, professional intervention is absolutely nesscessary x

my Housemate is 74, she started drinking wine age 20, and has between 2 and 3 bottles every day, she drinks no other liquids,

She was / is a very well known model and actress, she still gets all the work she wants.

On a day to day basis she functions very well, and no one would know what she drinks, until something out of the ordinary happens.

I have spoken to her dr about it, and apparantly if she stopped it would possibly kill her.

I had known her for 3 years at local dog club, before knowing she drank anything, One day she left her bottle of Perrier water in my car, by mistake, and I gave it to the dogs to drink, they wouldn't touch it, so I tasted it, of course it was wine.
