A religious fundamentalist intent on returning Britain to an absolutist Catholic Monarchy and destroying the primacy of Parliament.

He was a tool of rich Catholic landowners who wanted the above absolutist Catholic Rule. We would simply have had the Civil Wars sooner that's all.

Parliament wasn't perfect - nor is it still - but far, far better than what the conspirators wanted for Britain.
