Breast Feeding in public?

Iv just been reading an article on sky news, apparently a young mother had been forced to get off a bus and travel home by taxi after a passenger complained that she was breastfeeding.

So my questions to you all are...

Do you think it is wrong to breast feed in public?

Should there be more facilities for mothers to feed there babies in public places?

Personally i couldnt think of a more natural thing in the world to see and cant image there been reasons to take offence by it.

I saw a woman in a restaurant doing it.

Was taken aback a bit at first but not offended.

She was in the corner away from the main traffic of people.

Women should be allowed to do it - but maybe on the bus isnt the right place anyway.

Ya dont take ya dinnner on the bus do you - she could have done it before or after using the bus?????????????

thats bloody terrible!!

i see no problem with it at all and its other peoples sad opinions of what is right!!

i didnt breastfeed mine as i was going back to work 2 wks after she was born but i know if i had chose to, i would have done it anywhere and if other people had a problem it was tough!!

iv worked in restaraunts and always asked nursing mums if they would like to use the staff room if they felt embarrased but if someone complained about a mum feeding i would ask the one doin the complainin to leave! x

Anything that leads to women getting their breasts out is OK with me.

Seriously though I think it should generally be accepted.

Heard the report and it really wound me up. I fed mine on demand for first 9 months and then morning and evening till she weaned herself at about 19 months.

The only time I had any problems was on a train I had made every effort to be discreet but an elderly gent was sitting across the isle from me and had a real go at me about immodest behaviour, he felt I should have gone into the toiled to feed her!!! I asked him would he have eat his lunch in the toilet. He called the conductor and made a real fuss, he was moved to first class with an apology I got a dirty look. I wrote in and complained to Virgin and got £50 in vouchers lol

I feed freely where ever I was from good restaurants to double deckers, to park benches – didn’t and don’t see anything wrong with it one of the most natural things in the world and shouldn’t be hidden away.

serious now, I have seen women do this in public a number of times, despite my best efforts I have never managed to see the boobies the sodding baby always gets it's head in the way so obviously the women that do it do it discreetly and I see no reason why it should be offensive to anyone, some natural functions are should be banned (pissing on the bus is a bit way out) but I don't see breast feeding as anything wrong.

She would have probably got kicked off the bus if she the baby was hungry and continuously wailing for food (it was obviously a male baby, we have a habit of moaning when our tea isn't ready on time)

What a strange society we live in, sex and violence on the tv every night, shootings, rapes, murders, child abuse pretty much daily, and yet people are offended at a baby feeding. To me, it's what's going on in their mind that is the problem, if they can't separate a baby feedng and sex, they are the ones with problems.

Just my opinion you understand.

I agree its the most natural thing in the world, you cant always plan when a baby needs feeding, yes babies do settle into a routine and you can to an extent plan when they will need feeding, but why should a mother have to limit where she goes with her baby just because she might offend someone.

Personally if you are offended by it then i think it should be the offended person that should move not the feeding mother.

I breast fed and used to plan as far as i could (!) not to have to feed my baby in public, but when i did no one noticed as i did it so discreetly - a friend of mine once asked me if i was going to feed my baby when we were at a barbie and i told him i'd fed him twice! there's no need to get your boob completely out and make a scene and women who do this do so for effect and to be noticed (IMO) Z (obviously!)

I think the bus company is in danger here, civil rights and all that, will we see all buses required by law to provide baby feeding rooms on their buses, perhaps the mere discussion of that in the media will bring them and other such service providers to thier senses

A world of my own

I thinks its lovely yo see a woman feeding her child naturally. have never had and never would have a problem with it, after all its possible to do it discreetly these days.

When I was expecting my daughter I was in a cafe and was pleased to see a young lady breastfeeding at the table with her hubby and other child, (nothing was visible), but was then appalled by the comments of two old ladies on the next table who commented that it was disgusting and she should go in the toilets. I leaned over and said, 'how would you like to take your lunch and eat it in the toilets?' They soon shut up!

I kinda agree with you there... most tend to try and be discreet which I have no problem, I just find when they are sat in the middle of somewhere with their tit blatantly flopped out it's a bit much. Sure it's all natural blah blah, but it just makes me feel uncomfortable if I'm quite honest.

You tell us our whole lives not to stare at 'em and then expect us to feel fine at this particular time in your lives when you decide it's ok to whop one out

I see no problem with breast feeding in public. It is, like already said, the most natural thing in the world.

I used to breast feed my little one, and even though I would try my best not to feed in public, Obviously there were times when these plans went out of the window.

I wasn't ashamed to feed in public, and found it really annoying when people would pull their faces like what I was doing was against the law or something. Strange people!!!

I completly agree with this, I used to feed my son anywhere, but never had any bother as I dont think anyone noticed, I even had someone come over to see him while I was feeding, not realising what I was doing!

There are so many places that have a breast-feeding friendly sticker on the doors now that nobody should feel the need to hide away in the corner - although I dont agree with the mothers who whap the whole thing out in complete view of an entire shopping centre (seen this done too) there's just no need

Now there's a real lateral look at the situation. Just why are these people offended by a breast and a baby together? Can they not make the distinction?

Good post.

IMHO, there is a time and a place for everything, and I do not believe whipping out one's breast to feed a child in a crowded bus is appropriate.

The same way I do not like overt display of affection in public places.

The latter makes me uncomfortable, however, I can appreciate why it may be at times neccessary to breast-feed in public, and don't mind it providing it is done discreetly.

I was as discreet as possible when breastfeeding,I did not want my boobs on show in public and used to work around feeding times as much as I could

Not always possible though,as you can't tell a hungry baby to wait until you get home before you feed them so you have no choice but to do it in public, whether that is on a bus or in a cafe

The shops that have feeding facilities ie tiny rooms that can barely fit one woman and a pram in are ususally the places where you change the baby too and have bins full of stinking nappies, one hard chair to sit in and no windows...........not a nice environment really

It makes me uncomfortable when women sit there with their boobs out too as I know you can feed a baby without having to do that

On the other hand,it is the most natural thing in the world and it makes me mad that even now people are still debating whether it should be seen in public or not

My freind made me laugh when we were pregnant and at ante natal classes, she was only young and was the only one in the class to say there was noway on earth she was breast feeding as it reminded her of cows udders and she was'nt having any of that

Breast feeding should be encouraged, after all we are being told that breast is best. half the time you can't even tell a woman is actaully feeding because they are being discreet. No woman or baby should have to go to a toilet to feed. No-one else would.

yes but as an adult, you know you need to wait for something until it is the right time.

a baby does not know this, since when is it right to deny feeding a baby and leaving it to go hungry just to keep ADULTS happy?

It think the world has gone bloody mad!. In the 50's it was accepted you were frowned upon if you didn't breast feed. What is offensive about a mother feeding her hungry child???? Its not alright for her to do this, but we accept foul language, sex, violence, kids having kids at 12! If someone takes offence at that, they should leave not the mother! grrrr so annoying!
