More expensive, all the appeals etc, etc European court of appeal yada yada yada.

Cheaper and longer lasting punishment to keep people in prison.

So they may have a television and an Xbox with very limited channels and games are restricted, it just helps to stop them rioting. Prison is not a fun place to be. Crap food. Can't go out. No personal freedom whatsoever.

If you think DNA and forensics evidence is the be all and end all of proof you have been watching too much CSI. A well prepared, half intelligent criminal will know how minimise their chances of leaving DNA evidence.

There have been too many miscarriages of justice for the system to be given the ability to take life.

The amount of murders that occur in countries with the death penalty prove it is not a deterrent as either the murderer does not think they are going to be caught or it is carried out in the spur of the moment.

I would like to see harsher jail terms imposed for crimes against the person. It seems some people get sentanced to longer inside for robbing a bank or the mellenium dome than for raping a child or elderly person.

Sorry if this view doesn't fit into your idea of a serious heated debate.

I've known some dumb ones that have got away with a lot more than they ever got caught for though...

It's only when they've done some really silly shit like kidnapping and shooting someone that the police really went after them...

The police once swapped a scanner they'd seized off of them for a gun...

They knew they had it but after a series of early morning armed raids still couldn't find it so they did a swap.

I've never worked in one but a friend used to work at a young offenders prison (Glenn Parva in Leicester). From all accounts it was pretty miserable with a lot of suicide attempts and many of the guys reoffended soon after their release.

I used to work for social services we took on and rehabilitated young offenders on parole, tho I have never been inside I heard many stories from the lad who I worked with and from what they say its not a nice place and the stories of them all having TVs and play stations is utter rubbish

but interesting question, if we bough back the death sentence what age are we aiming it for, those who say yes would you happily see a convicted juvenile killed?

I think this is a bit extreme, if someone wanted to die and was physically able to end their own life surely they would just end their own life rather than go out and kill someone else to gain what they could easily do themselves

All other crimes should be justified on what they have done. For example if they commit fraud. You declare them as bankrupt no matter how much they stole as who knows they may have stolen more than what they have been caught for. Plus the fine given to them should be the value of their home and if they don't own their home. Prison should be the option.

Things like theft should bw common sense. Give them 3 strikes. First two fine them and make sure the second fine is bigger than the first and the third strike means hands/fingers being amputated as how can you steal without having hands or fingers?

Bring back caning in schools too. Children get away with murder and that's why they have no respect for authority.

Children know no limits, they see death, murder and violence in films and games, the cane was a good way to hold some type of punishment over a childs head, the local bobby would give you a clip round the ear hole, take you home and you would be in for another slap, so children had respect for parents, teachers and the police, that respect isn't always there any more, just one reason society has become more violent, and more murders happen, there is no fear of authority any more, I don't believe in hanging, but I do believe in knowing right from wrong.

I work with a lot of people with Alzheimer's, some can be violent but that's part of their job, I wouldn't compare their behaviour due to their illness to a teacher hitting a child as form of punishment though

If you have an accident or illness when away from home, a micro chip could contain all your medical history, drug allergies, contact details, at present if you are taken ill, no one can get access to your medical records. even a local hospital, cant click into your doctors records, identity cards are used in many countries, so why not a micro chip, then abducted children could be found, people would think before they break the law, cheat the social security system, we would have a safer place to love and raise our family, I cant see any thing negative about it, unless you are doing something wrong, it will happen, sooner or later.

You don't get respect by beating people, you get fear. Which you ended up by saying that there is no fear of authority. If you replace respect with fear in your post it'll be more accurate. Why should people or children fear authority? I used to get the leather belt, didn't stop me pissing about to be honest, not judging by the amount of times I got it anyhow. I just ended up hating my father. When I got grounded I asked for the belt instead rather than staying in for a week.

Loss of liberty is punishment. Loss of making any of your own decisions of when or what to eat, sleep, wake, when to go out or come back.

I'm very sorry to say i would vote for capital punishment.

The sad fact is that since the abolition of the death sentence the numbers of murders have gone through the roof. On numerous occasions our law makers (all parties) have changed the definition of murder to hide the real extent of the problem. And at the same time have reduced the time murderers spend in prison in order to keep the statistics looking ok.

Fact is if we still used the same definition for murder as was in use when the death sentence was abolished there would be no argument about its reintroduction.

For the record I once believed that the death penalty was immoral. Now i believe that not having the death penalty is amoral!

You mean like Stefan kiszko who was unequivocally convicted of the sexual assault and murder of Lesley Molseed? Kiszko had severe learning difficulties and was framed by the police. He spent years in prison wrongly accused and was victimised by other inmates. The real killer was caught via DNA evidence years later and was sentenced to life for the vile and horrendous slaying of a child. Kiszko died a broken man. Is that unequivocal enough to hang people? We are supposed to be civilised and state murder reduces the masses to the law of the jungle.

now its not fence sitting when most have said there has been MISCARRIAGES of justice...we fence sitters might just have a conscience before adopting string em up brigades foolish ideas!

I say foolish, not branding people idiots, but really just highlighting the fact you have to think it very carefully through, from the ethical to the legal.Many of those off the fence in favor of the death penalty are forgetting there has to be a unbiased agenda.I understand rage,panic and fear..thankfully its not normally reflected in the law(and when it does, youy will find that sentences are overturned)

maybe just maybe as much as you dont want to..put yourself in the shoes of an innocent person facing any charges...now multiply that feeling when there has been a serious crime committed............

The UK law reporting system numbers 20 people convicted of first degree murder, since 1965, that were proved to be innocent and released from prison. This is the year that capital punishment was abolished. The report says there are currently 50 cases under review. In my mind that is an awful lot of people that could have been executed. If that is sitting on a fence I am glad to be there!

What is a100% conviction? People get convicted beyond reasonable doubt. There is no sliding scale of guilt

in a few years your DNA can be placed at the scene of a crime,it could have been synthesized or retrieved in person.

I can place you at the scene of a crime in a photo, I could have a computer model made up thats incredibly life like..showing u being caught in the act

its not entirely science fiction you know

so with these things possibly getting better to fake...how long should we wait till its 100% that we keep the 'guilty' alive after they have been sentenced?

Lets lighten up a bit, Bring back hanging, it brings people together and is a reason to meet and celebrate,

It would be fun in the town square, hissing and booing,

People loved a good hanging, just as they loved the roman games, lets stop being PC and get back to the good old days.

Even adverts on telly are featuring executions now, let the kids see real life murder, rather than letting them see it on their ipads and x boxes,

To all the parents out there in fab land, you don't mind your kids playing violent games , let them live in real time and bring hanging back.
