"Just heard from someone about them losing £1100 to a scam regarding student flats to rent around universities. My son nearly fell for the same trick but the bad English started the alarm bells... Both were from Gumtree, offering lovely flats to rent in good areas and both asked for deposit and month's rent to be sent via Western Union. Needless to say, it was a con so if you are looking for a flat to rent...beware. The other scam, well, I think it is, is via text messages saying I've exceeded my download limit and to buy more usage via a 5 digit number. No mention of my service provider. IS this a scam? " If you call 0998654631212 and select option 4, you will be able to get all the answers you require

"Yes it's a scam. Anything to do with money I would independentlynch ting the provider I'm with be it banking, phone etc. I would also not rent a place off somewhere like gumtree because there are no checks etc done. I'd always use a registered estate agent. " Or without viewing the place and seeing inside

" I would also not rent a place off somewhere like gumtree because there are no checks etc done. I'd always use a registered estate agent. " I've rented houses to people on GT so not all bad. The ads are aimed at the naive. They work as they seems to promise that bit more for not a lot of money, aimed to sucker people in. My son realised it was a fake from the English and the not quite right story but Google was indeed a friend as the road they'd picked for the flat's location, next to the university, didn't actually have flats on it!

"and these undergrads are 'the future of our nation'?" Know what's the worse? The one who sent the money is studying finance and intends to be a financial manager......The banks will be queuing up to employ that one
