They only catch them in the sea its not like a cow where you have to feed it for months or a sheep where you feed it and give it an occasional haircut.

guessing its the price of the fuel to get a boat out to sea and the fishermans wages

A mackeral is around £2-£3/kg in Cornwall. A cow would cost you £1500 for a half ton heffer at those rates.

Fish is cheap

Sustainability and overfishing. Certain fish types have been fished to near extinction hence higher prices as quotas put in place to build stocks. Look for sustainable fish like coley a member of the cod family but a third of the price.

id rather not bother than eat 5 quid lobster. It will have been frozen for months from maine and will have such a lack or taste. Better to save up for native lobster and have once a year and experience taste. Or langoustine has a taste like lobster but relatively cheap

CORNWALL

Scallops are a good example...the fisherman gets around 3-50 a dozen...and how much are they each in the shops? About a pound? Middlemen do very well..as well as supermarkets...and the boats were getting that price 12 years ago...its only because they catch more that its viable...crab and lobster much the same...

It's frozen most of the time. I only take it out occasionally to slap someone's face with it. (After thoroughly wetting it first of course)

fish isn't expensive, it is about supply and demand.

farm animals are pumped full of anti biotics and growth hormones, so you are paying for water and drugs.

You are also paying for cruelty, and by wanting cheaper food you increase the cruelty.

Some fish is 'trendy'. Your fishmonger may be able to suggest an affordable alternative.

Buying dear fish for a romantic* dinner for two is one thing. Feeding a large family is quite different.

Spot on, three quarters of the Crab caught in the UK goes straight abroad, fisherman are lucky to get a pound a pound which is no more than it was 15 years back, yet the fuel and bait bill, rope and Pots has all gone sky high. This time of the year your lucky to even get a market, where some of the Scottish fleet have had to go over to catching shell fish because of all the restrictions catching wet fish, it puts tons and tons more crab on the market which means peanuts for the lads risking their lives.

Best fish for Whelks, again most go abroad, the Koreans love them.
