Hey every one i have just had this discussion with a friend and could not come to a agreement.

general topic was does violence in games then make the player more violent or aggressive?

i believe its down to the person as many children i.e under 18 play over 18 rated games and in some circumstances copy what they hear being said or thing that happen in the game even if minor

what's your opinion?

I personally am not affected at all. I can play these games and not get any more aggressive at all. Infact, I sometimes find things disturbing.

However, young children are likened to sponges... They're still learning a lot and sort of soak up info and actions quicker. The more the see violence, the more they think .its accepted.

That's my view on it!

I'd never let my kid play violent games until he is old enough to understand reality.

I find it calms me down. If I have a bad night in work I'll go home and have an hour on battlefields or GTA and just go gun crazy.

Now I'll get a few bad comments on this one but I let my 8yr old son play GTA but that's only because he's not daft enough to copy what's said on the game. If he hears swearing he does that thing kids do where they go "ooooooorrrrrr he swore".

And he knows the difference between a game and real life. He knows he can't just go and steal cars or shoot people in real life.

He says he wants to do security like me so he can catch bad people like i do lol.

Told him to be a policeman as the money's better lol.

Video games have a certificate of age same a film does, its down to a responsible adult to monitor or flatly refuse to allow an underage child to play a PEGI 16 or 18 rated game.

I have been and brought cod and gta for my son but he knows it's a game and can't go round shooting robbing people, he's fully aware of what acceptable behaviour is even to the point of telling me how immature I am cheeky twat lol

I know they said Childs Play was part of what set off the 2 monsters that killed James Bulger and then in America a few months back, they said I think it was COD to blame for an 8 yr old boy shooting his grandma in the head.

Maybe they can be a trigger for underline conditions that already exist but I don't think they turn people into these things.

I will always dispute that claim.

Out of the millions of copies of say Halo that were sold was there a huge sudden increase in children shooting people, no there were 1 or 2 and they were found to have other outside influences that caused them to snap. "
does imagery of benovolance and kindness inspire people toward altruism and goodness ..of course it dies ...remember some people teeter on the edge of reason and it takes only a nudge for someone to err..especially without correct paternal guidance

I think were really identifying children as the ones being affected by violence here. Not so much adults.

Really, the 16/18 laws are here for a reason. Is imagine there was good research/evidence to support this too. I believe its appropriate.

However, ofcourse, all kids are different.

It is proven that children do learn very quick though and can adopt what they learn... Good or bad.

I stick to the point that children shouldn't play/watch violence. I also think it can be damagibg and disturbing too for a young mind. My sister for example, used to gave nightmares about witches, etc... Ofcourse, because of what she watched in tv.

He only gets an hour at a time. Good thing is, my son is active so we're normally out playing footy or basketball

Agreed if the inclination is within the child in the first place it could be anything really that sets the trigger off, but surely if the child has issues should the parents not have an idea, I think in most cases they show signs prior to the act as in mistreating animals etc, not that I'm blaming the parents but they must surely see something wrong I'm very intune with my kids moods, I would however if they went off the rails blame myself not a game/film, it's my job to ensure they know right from wrong

I do feel too many kids are becoming lazy through over gaming and not enough sports/activities.

I spent a lot of time paying a rather grim game called manhunt a while back. they tried to ban it after a kid killed his mate with a hammer.

I must admit it did find a way of getting into your head, I noticed I was having some pretty fucked up thoughts and dreams. as an adult I can deal with that, I don't think kids can cope so well. I do wish parents would pay some attention to age ratings.

On the other hand society has had psychos for millennia, films and video games can't be directly responsible, but I believe they can be a significant influencing factor.

Very true. Studies have found that exposure to such violence desensitises younger people and makes them less empathetic.

I have 2 teen age sons who play the most appallingly violent games and they are very gentle and well grounded guys. The Evening news is full of real violence. Actual beheadings posted on the internet. I think shooting cartoon hookers on a game is not really what's to blame foe desensitising children these days.

I remember being banned from every Colliery in the district as a kid after playing too much Manic Miner on the Spectrum.

I wonder if the peeps in white coats have been looking at this from the wrong end? Perhaps if you are a bit of a loose screw you may find violent games/films/comics/penny dreadfulls/salacious woodcuts/obnoxious cave paintings or more interest than your average person who just plays them without getting immersed?

No it doesn't. The player has to have violent tendencies already.

This topic is always brought up when games like GTA comes out.

The thing people forget is there's films out there that are far worse than games.A Serbian Film for example (just Google the "story")

Yes I know you don't take a part in the actions of the characters in the film, but it's still a violent film.

Thing is, there were violent people before games ever came into the limelight.

Long story short.....no.

As with all things, with proper supervision and moderate consumption, videogames are positive. They aren't tots, and many games are clearly not made for kids (ESRB and PEGI ratings are there for a reason)

A well brought up, well adjusted individual doesn't get more violent from playing violent videogames.
