If you watched a documentary about a small town, which you lived in and it was slating the area. However the camera footage and evidence shown was justified. What would your reaction be:

1. Would you just ignore it?

2. Write to the producers of the show and complain as not everyone should be tarred with the same brush?

3. Be disgusted as they didn't have anyone's permission to run that documentary as they didn't ask the local residents?

4. Do whatever it takes to stop the criticism of the area as in admit the town has a problem, which needs to be reduced significantly? (Maybe go te extra mile and help to do this).

It's tv. They gotta put some spin on it (depending on the channel)

Look at the outrage at Skint on channel 4.

Jamie Oliver did a show in Rawmarsh which is just n the town I live in. It annoyed me as he chose some proper idiots to talk to but it makes for "good tv" I guess

What a daft thing to say as C4 get most of their stuff from outside production companies. Nothing like a bit of generalisation though.

True, but it was some of the locals who were furious. To me though they have a point. Camera never lies and if you think what they are showing is a problem. Then admit the town/area has a problem and see of anything can be done about it.

Everyone who lives in that area has apparently said its disgusting and its all wrong. Despite the fact its shown it all on camera and in the actual town itself. That area has got a reputation for what has been shown.

They didn't interview any apparently and as soon as the program had been aired. That's when the residents started to complain.

As stupid as it sounds. People carrying cameras around weren't seen, but there have been a few helicopters flying quite low over those areas over the last month or so. Possible filming? I doubt it, but apart from cameramen being clever and avoiding everyone. That's the only other explanation. Anyway this is going off subject a bit, lol.

You are not on about Barry are you? Its the only place I can think of where the residents are totally out of it on soapbar to the point they might miss a big bloke with a 2 ft camera on his shoulder followed by a man with a long pole with what looks like a grey hairy dead cat with terminal rigor mortis on the end of it.

My hometime in Derbys has always been at the forefront of criticism. The wrong uns continue to breed and sponge off the benefits, causing shit for all those decent and normal people in the community. We were in the independent not so long back, front page - crackdown UK was the headline, pro rata we had the highest crack user/dealers in the whole of Britain. Awful when you look at the cities that were always in the running. Fuck the critics, my town has some lovely parts, rural too, great people full of character and honourable too. The oxygen thieves are everywhere, it may be looked down on as a shithole but I'm fiercely proud of the place

That's right. There's more to show as well. One was on tv the other day and there's another part on Monday. To me if someone says something bad about the town. Just claim your innocence move on. Don't say its false as cameras don't lie and people/places have a reputation for a reason.

Like I said I didnt see it but its rife up here as well in the valleys. Of course people will deny its an issue because they have no grip on reality. The problem is its too easilly available and too fucking cheap. About a third of the price per gram than . Its horrible stuff....especially dangerous for young women due to the effect it has on the brain.

So you think that people who denay its a problem in the area have don't live in the real world and don't have a grip on reality? I don't want to get onto the argument on drugs for various reasons. Just thought what people think of tv documentaries that slate their town or somewhere that's close to home. Would they admit to it, denay it, etc.

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

Well if it is an obvious problem and they are denying it then they are probably unaware of it. So yes in that respect they dont have a grip on reality. Just because they arent aware of something it doesnt mean it doesnt happen. I would imagine the majority of people where i live.....especially the older generations.....would think you were talking nonsense if you told them half the village is on the stuff (and yes that is a slight exaggeration).

I remember a few years back phill and Kirsty on c4 named Middlesbrough as the worst place to live in the uk and I'd say 3/4 minimum of the footage wasn't actually of Middlesbrough.

To be fair to them Middlesbrough is pretty brutal at times but it's not half as bad as some of the suburbs I've seen in some cities across the uk.

We did have jeff stelling stick up for us on soccer Saturday which was hilarious!

What does jelf know about nice towns/cities. He supports Hartlepool . I think everywhere as a rough are and a part where its full of drugs/muggings, etc and you wouldn't let someone you care about what that street at night or whatever. However I think its all about percentages. Like you said 3/4 of the image wasn't shown of Middlesbrough. So about 1/4 is considered to be rough. Whereas I think about 70% or 80% was shown of the other town and the people who complained are in denial, not aware what's going on or just trying to stick up for the town without facts to back it up. My thoughts of a nice area is. Would you travel there for a day/weekend trip or go on holiday or even travel to have a night out there. Whatever the answer is that's how nice the area is, but no one seems to understand that

Wasn't on about me, lol. I meant people complain that no one asked their permission to view it and they say the area has no problems at all, which is the total opposite of the documentary that was shown. My point was how would you feel if it was your town/area that "had" the problem and it was broadcasted to the nation even though you didn't think it was that bad?

If the programme was purely about said problem I wouldn't worry. If it was a tourist information video and just showed the bad bits I'd be annoyed because who's going to visit somewhere like that?

I can understand that no one wants to see the place they live in in a bad light but they need to give the viewers some credit for being able to recognise clever editing and filming etc.

People just like complaining these days. As I said no one needs to get permission from all of the residents to film in public spaces. They only need permission for people they have interviewed, places they have filmed in if they are privately owned etc.

If you don't think it's that bad, there's no problem.

Otherwise you either move (if you can) or work to make it better.

Under no circumstances invite Frankie Vaughan or Ian Duncan Smith to visit.

Would you think though. They have a point. Camera never lies (although may exaggerate). So just agree with it, but say there are decent places/people around and name them? I don't know how anyone can say something isn't true when a lot of the town say it is and the tv says it is as well.

no i wouldn't, if they don't like it turn the telly over. I

f they are happy living like an ostrich and not noticing the real life problems around them then let them bleat on but all it does is make the place look like its full of moaning Maureens and Malcolms.

ALL places have problem areas, everyone knows that and like i said, it sounds as if the programme you are on a bout was about a partcular problem in most places these days, meow meow. it wasnt saying 'oh look at this shit town, its the only place in the UK with this problem'

This was on a welsh channel. So only local areas shown. Also some of the viewers were so angry (or wanted publicity). They complained to their local papers and now the papers are full of t and have pictures and interviews with the residents that weren't happy about it. I call them attention seekers who are blind.
