Thames Water, wtf?

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Thames Water have been calling to hassle me recently because they want me to pay my water bill up until the end of March next year. I've told them repeatedly I'll pay monthly for what I've used.

Their failure to set up a payment plan for me left the account overdue for a few weeks and they've called frequently in that time to demand payment (up to the end of March).

I finally got things sorted out a few days ago. Ironically I wanted to clear the bill right up until my moving date, now I have one, but was told their system can't handle that! So I brought the account up to date and discussed when I should notify them of my moving date.

I've just received a call from their collections team to confirm my account is up to date! The Indian man on the end of the line seemed a little taken aback when I pointed out that having made the payment myself, by phone to their customer service team, I am aware a payment has been made and my account is up to date. I asked if it was common for people's bills to be paid without them knowing.

As if I don't have anything better to do than deal with pointless phone calls.

I wonder how much lower my water bill would be if they weren't paying people to make completely unnecessary calls to waste their customers' time?

Anyone else had a company call them to "confirm" something that's blindingly obvious they already know? What the heck is the point?
