I keep seeing people use this term...

I wonder how many actually know what a CHAV is?

It does actually mean something and I would ask those who work in the field where it is used to please not post for a while.

The term has its origins in the Romani word chavi, meaning "child".[4][5] The derivative chavette has been used to refer to females.[6] The adjectives "chavish" and "chavtastic" have been used in relation to items designed for or suitable for use by chavs.[4] The word existed in the 19th century, Lexicographer Eric Partridge mentions it in his huge dictionary of slang and unconventional English. 'chaval' was used to describe a boy. There is no connection between its current use and its historical use in Romany history.[7]

The word in its current pejorative usage is recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary as first used in a Usenet forum in 1998 and first used in a newspaper in 2002.[8] By 2005 the term became widespread in its use as to refer to a type of anti-social, uncultured youth, who wear a lot of flashy jewellery, white trainers, baseball caps, sham designer clothes and the Girls expose a lot of midriff.[7]

If everyone who knew something 'for a fact' had a £ for every 'fact' they claim to know, we wouldn't need social security.

CHAV was an acronym used by education and social services to highlight negative indicators on case files.

Like it or not living in a council house is a good indicator of being in a low income, low education group or having other problems. Add a history of violence to that and you have a potentially lethal combination for a social worker or teacher making a home visit to discuss a child's behavior with its parents.

Of all the people least likely to indulge in what is, rightly or wrongly, tarring council house dwellers with the same brush - educationalists and social workers are at the top of the list.

The council house and violent is an urban myth, probably started by and certainly kept going by Daily Mail readers.

The term 'council housed and violent' isn't a parallel anyone draws against ppl that live in council houses it's a lyric from a Plan B song released a couple of years ago.

Chav is a traveller word for child and it got adopted by ppl for use about the general youth of each era.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Are we going to discuss some of the other chav myths like the one involving Chatham?

As for living on a council estate being an indicator of low education... I'm not going to comment beyond saying I don't agree with you.

Still, I suppose it's just another stereotype to throw into the Fabs pot.

I and my ex used to live on Woodside (next to the Elizabathian [you may know it]). And at no time have I said all council house tenants are either ill-educated or violent.

What I have said is that where children have become subject the subject social services or of educational "statementing" then home background is reviewed and coming from a council house with a history of violence are red flag indicators.

Again I say that this is not the same as saying that all who live on council estates are uneducated violent wastrels.

if you look at the very post you have quoted, that i quoted, you have stated council house tenants are ill educated.

see:

Like it or not living in a council house is a good indicator of being in a low income, low education group or having other problems.

yes, i know the area of which you speak well, and it may well not be known to you, but when woodside was developed, they purposely used the area to stick all the trouble makers in (it was the veritable sink estate, and was purposely designed as such)

in fact, there were more pedophiles per household on woodside than ANY other estate in the UK.

and, you may never have noticed, but at the entrances at either end, they buried posts so that, in the event of any disorder, the whole estate could be blocked off at the road.

as said, it was designed to be a shit hole, and a shit hole it is, so you cant really use it as a valid example in this case

I agree this isn't the same as saying all people who live in council houses are violent but its a pretty damning and ill informed statement. If you base what you say on evidence from one particular area it does no more than reflect your lazy thinking back on you.
