My place is not dirty, nor does it have damp rising up the walls.

I live in one room, the bedroom, as it's the warmest room in the place.

But I feel embarrassed when people turn up

. Some might say it's minimalistic and having no carpets is 'rustic'.

Yes I know, I'm not inviting people to inspect the place, but I still apologise when people turn up

Clean and not having any odd smells is better than any ideal home type place that isn't clean and has a whiff that you can't for the life of you identify.

I have to agree with diamond. Sometimes we have to consider what's important and if you are embarrassed by your place then try and make it a home which you can do on a budget.

Use candles to make the place feel warmer and more inviting, a couple of cushions in warm colours also help.

I used to be the same as you and it's amazing how a few cheap items can make a room feel more homely.

But at least it's clean which is always the one thing which would have me running!

A friend of mine got a massive big rug on the carboot a few weeks ago for £10. It covers most of the floor in his bedroom. Don't worry if your rooms clean and smells nice, I'm sure the floor is the last thing anyone would worry about x

I once made my own rug with those carpet samples you get from carpet shops for 20p each. I just laid 40-odd of them out in the colour pattern I liked and then very loosely stitched them together with twine.

Only had one visitor in my house since 2006 ..We are having a stand off about getting rid of stuff..

cant decorate till 40 years of his clutter gone.

why do we need to have 144 bloody golf trophies..!! etc

I am permanently embarrassed about my home.

Ikea has some good large rugs,maybe more practical than carpet when you may move to a better place. car boots are a good way to get nic nacs to make it look more comfortable.

If your room isn't massive perhaps plan it so you can get an off cut, or as i did once 2 offcuts and used them both for the bedroom. Both same colour/pattern so nobody noticed. It will instantly make you feel warmer. A word of warning though: Carpet burns

start by mak,ing the room you spend most of your time cosier... yup an off cut of carpet won't be too much.

and then build from there. Charity shops will have loads of great things.

Brighton - even Hove!

Paint it all white then use natural materials and brightly coloured accessories to liven it up. Shabby chic is so in in Brighton so the older, shabbier and multi use something is, the better. A warm rug will help. Then you won't be so 'chylly'. Also go for a minimalist look and store stuff in old suitcases etc.

Gum tree have stuff people are giving away, google lobay which searches for local stuff pick up only from eBay you just put your postcode in. There are recycling sites and lots of better off people throw out/give away perfectly good stuff.

I know someone that carpeted their whole house from the skips at the bigger carpet shops.

Freecycle & charity shops. Watch superscripmers. Love upcycling stuff. Gotta b honest I'm a bit of a skip raider as well!!

This the first house of mine that's had carpet!! mostly the floors have been painted with loads of rugs (ikea for big cheap rugs)

Or go ultra minimal & just have a bed & loads of candles!!

I dont look at what people have or dont have....as long as what you do have is clean and comfortable...why worry and you shouldnt apologise to anyone .

Ive been in my flat for 18 months now and still have no carpets but I have rugs, its homely, warm and exceptionally clean, I can't see me ever affording carpets but I'm not embarrassed to bring guys home.

Carpet contractors

When they redo places that have carpet tiles they just chuck the lot away. If you get rid of the ones that have been in the walkway they are usually perfect.

I have done the Garage, the Shed etc. But they are more than good enough for a house.

I saw them throw away enough to do probably two houses the other day, and all because one strip two tiles wide was worn where the walkway down the office was.

Pop round a few and ask if you can take some old ones off their hands

And the best thing is you can fit them and make them look good yourself with a stanley knife, a pair of scissors and not much else

Such a waste

It's worth it - when they redo offices they use wheelbarrows to move the old ones out. There are that many of them.

I'd recommend the bookface selling pages they are usually called something like "bid to buy" or something like that. I got a job lot of mainly new, next bathroom items, vases, towels, shower curtains, ornaments, soap dispenser all brand new with tags apart from the painting for £15. Would have cost way over £100 if bought from Next.

I also recently did the carpet in our hall, stairs and landing and front room for £300. It's a well known national carpet chain with a red and yellow emblem! If you're not too fussed about style I bet you can get a roll end or such like for under £100 and either fit it yourself or pay for them to fit. It would probably keep your room warmer too. As others have suggested a fresh lick of paint (magnolia is cheapest), some new curtains (cheap off bookface or even free) and maybe a couple of lamps/candles can really transform a room.
