Following the Train Fares thread- does anyone use any of the car clubs to get around?

On the face of it it looks an affordable alternative to buying and running a car of your own, which will spend most of its life sitting idle outside your home, deteriorating away at a rate of knots.

You pay an annual fee + £x per hour. Collect the car from your nearest pickup point. Drive to where you're going and leave the car at the nearest drop off point.

In Glasgow at least, the parking places are free. It may be Boris charges are waived too.

Ok if you live on the doorstep of the pick up point I guess. Can't see it being cheaper though unless you are a very light user.

Yeah I've used Zipcar for about 4 years now. I commute to work by train, live in London and generally hate driving anywhere so it's perfect for the half dozen times a year I actually *need* my own vehicle.

Insurance is included for the duration of your rental, subject to excess.

You can pay extra to reduce the excess to zero.

That's quite true.

For me, this is precisely why I use it. I don't drive much and the cars are very close by, both at work and at home.

Zipcar pays congestion charge for you. Not sure about other clubs.

I was a member when I lived in London and it worked out great value overnight, not so good value for a weekend. I could hire a car overnight including 50 miles petrol for around £25 - noticably cheaper than a cab home if I was happy not to drink.

There are cars everywhere, polo's, people carriers and transits so they suit all purposes. Where I Lived in Hackney there were at least a dozen vehicles within a mile of my flat.

Boris refuses to accept that they are a green initiative and to waive the congestion charge but it is covered in the hire price.

i cant see them being cheaper than having your own car tbh.

for the price of insurance, tax and mot including the price of a cheap run around car that we bought last year I've spent less than ?1k easily. less than ?20 a week and all ive got to do is put petrol in it.

I can see why the scheme is a success in London a combination of 24 hour buses, the tubes and overland, what a crap city it is to drive in and the cost of parking permits even to park in your own street all combine to mean a lot of people don't want or can't afford to own a car but do need one occasionally.

I can't see how it would work in other cities though.

There is one in Gloucester however all the pick up points are in the centre itself so pointless for me living on the outskirts
