I pay what I owe. I do meter readings and check the bill. They don't change it.

British Gas have done it with people I know. Now they pay gas by a meter and are thinking of doing that with electric too. That person phoned them up saying how much they spent on the meter and British gas said to the customer its because they are more careful with the amount with what they are using. So now the "debt" is quite big and will now start to come down because of the meter. They said they won't change firms until that debt is gone.

On another note they say we will have many power cuts in 5 years due to lack of power stations. Yet they claim all the increases in bills go on building and maintaining them. So where has the money gone as it clearly hasn't gone on power stations if we are going to get power cuts ina. Few years.

If I had enough power I would get everyone to swap companies, but sadly I don't.

They Are All as Bad as Each Other.. Vast-Profits and Massive Bonuses - paid to people for doing next to nothing..

The Troubles in Grangemouth (scotland) for Example.. They Claim to be Losing 10million per Month and They want the workers to take pay cuts and no overtime etc - And need Goverment Grants to help keep people in jobs and - Improve the factories etc - but yet they rake in billions of Profit per year..

If They are not Blatant price-Rigging then i dont know why we have the "Watchdog" part of the Goverment..

Talk about turning a Blind-Eye..

Where ever you go they are all the same, after profit.

Sooner or later we must face facts we are running out of fossil fuels and the prices will be going up. Today it's gas, soon enough electric will go up to and whatever the next generation of energy is going to be we will pay for it.

Basically a vicious cycle that we can't get out of unless we change to using wood and have our own mini forest to cut from

Some places in Europe haven't risen their prices or gas or electric. Look at the profits. Its stupid amount of money. I am sure if every body made a stand and decided to join a different company. (Maybe they all join the same one). The company will go bust or drop their prices by an awful lot.

They all will put their prices up you watch them then offer a fixed 2/3 year team once done which is a little rich. The best option is to go for one of the group join ups when you get 2,4,8,16 ,32 or even above 64+ thousand households going to one supplier for a cheaper deal or look at comparison sites like Martin Lewis's money supermarket and see what is he best deal for you. Sticking seems to be the worst option these days.

It would be nice if we were using less but demand for gas and electricity has risen over the last 30 years ok we are using a small amount from renewable sores but with our own nuclear plants coming to the end of their working life its going to be more reliant on gas powered stations.

Yes we are!! Oil, coal, gas eventually they will be gone. The price hikes now are being put on green taxes/emissions targets which are being passed on to us. Also we don't produce enough energy to meet the demands of the nation so we do import a lot of resource. I may be playing devils advocate here but it is what's happening. Damn the numpties who thought privatising energy was a good idea, just watch out for your postage costs which will soon be going up

As I understand fracking, you drill a hole downwards then sideways. You fill the hole with liquid under pressure and that forces the gas out.

It can also damage the soil around where you've been drilling, to the point of causing an earthquake.

Dread to think how much extra you have paid. On a bill I average 90quid a quarter for electric and 250 to 300 for gas.

I'm paying 25quid minimum on electric per week now and once heating goes on, talking 40plus a week for gas.. more if I have to use the heating constantly.

Based on uswitch site even allowing for increase they announce still cheapest for me just anout.

Energy privatisation quite possibly biggest disaster imposed on uk consumers by any government.

They all get gas from same source same with electricity. Only thing that varies is the administration of the companies.

Government just sit back and do fuck all to help people.

The Govt advice after BG announced their price rise was to tell consumers to switch, no mention of investigating why the energy companies always put up their prices just before winter arrives or how their profiteerring is going to effect those who cannot afford their higher prices and the effect on the elderly, they ignore the obvious and give out stupid advice.

It's stupid because there are 6 big energy suppliers and only 2 have announced a price hike, the consumer watchdog advises consumers to wait until everyone has raised their prices and then decide which is the cheapest and then switch.(they are virtually guaranteed because once one supplier has increased their charges the rest have always done it too)

"Or more wind power has been built in Scotland..."

That won't help. We already paying over the odds for renewably generated power just to make it worthwhile for the companies creating it to keep going.

Were also paying to provide insulation and the replacement/ improvement of central heating boilers for those who can't afford to do it themselves.

You may well have missed the report from the companies doing the fracking.

They them selves state "it will not affect the price of retail gas one penny"

The way gas is sold in the USA is completely different to how it is done in Europe.

Now Compo has done a deal with the Chinese to invest in new Nuclear power stations in the UK.

You can certainly see the price going up with yet another company wanting increased profits.

They are all bought and sold on the stock market and prices to change quickly (in minutes).

The big energy companies buy theirs 6-12 months in advance though.

Cant understand how Nuclear generated electricity changes so much though.

Not like the fuel is used up quickly,or bought at short notice.

The 12 billion build cost (for Hinkley point C) might have something to do with it as well.

Just agreed a garauntee'd £94 per MW for Hinkley C because EDF and their Chinese partners cannot commit 12 billion without knowing they can earn it back.

Price goes up in winter because the fuel suppliers put their prices up in winter. Last night there was 3 gigawatts of gas running across the country, 11gig of coal and one gig of wind. French link is always running at the 2 gig capacity (thanks to their nukes) and the Dutch link varies. Because gas generally is a whole lot more expensive in this country, as the coal stations shut and the gas stations are forced on our prices go up.

People need to remember the energy companies have control of less than 20% of your bill the government are responsible for the rest. They make a 4 to 5% profit. They make high numbers because they have a bucket load of customers. Of course the government are perfectly happy for you to keep blaming the big 6 after telling you all how much you need green energy that's triple the price of conventional.

Oh wait half the ministers have ties with green energy business?! Who would have thought that?!

Those of you bemoaning the privatisation of the generation industry are most probably right. Oh and might even get to see it nationalised again when the big 6 start abandoning ship because the current business models are not sustainable for them.
