if it had been a civilian, they would have been charged with perverting the course of justice, but seeings as htey are serving officers, their integrity has been brought into question....

The offending officers should be tried and dealt with by the courts and kicked out the force. But can't see it happening.

Just as I felt Mitchell should be castigated if he used such a term at the time I feel the same about the police officers involved.

Disciplinary and legal action for perverting the course of justice AND wasting police time. The number of police forces involved in this has been ridiculous.

the problem so far is that mitchell himself actually hasn't made any offical complaint against the police concerned in "plebgate"....

what the IPCC actually said was there was a probablity that the police weren't telling the entire truth in regards to the meeting mitchell had with his local force, west mercia, and the comments they made after..... which is verified by the secret recording mitchell made....

and in that sense the head of the west mercia police federation should apologise... which he hasn't so far

If they are willing to try and do this to a member of the government, what would they be willing to do to an average member of the public if one should upset them...

And once again when caught out they close ranks to protect the guilty ones within. It only takes a few bad apples to spoil the rest.

In my experience, most Police officers are happy to lie to get whatever outcome they want from any given situation.

To some degree, they can do as they please and, when they close ranks, there's nothing you can do to stop them.

"most police officers" what a load of crap. Most police officers do a great job and they want to do a great job. Every shift going to calls where you're meeting people who want confrontation, spit, swear at them etc. I have a lot of respect for them and yes, there will be one or two bad apples but I believe that's the exception, not the rule.

Nail on the head.

The police tell lies, I have been lied about in court once (driving offence, the judge took a look at the evidence and threw it out) and had 2 WPC's stand in front of me and tell bare faced lies (my offence, I wanted to see my 3 year old son, oh and I was a man, "possession of an offensive penis" it would appear).

The police federation are a union and thats it, sod the public, more money for them and their members is their only aim.

The police made " Pleb gate" political.

As others have said the police lie much to often to get convictions and now to discredit politicians . While it won't affect most people it is harmful to our freedom and rights or at least potentially so

One or two bad eggs??? Not where I was brought/dragged up - it was common knowledge that there was vast corruption across the board & now, with the Hillsborough business in particular, some of us are finally learning that it isn't & wasn't just 'one or two

eggs' after all!!

All I know is Mitchell was obviously very rude to those officers.

As was a local MP to a friend recently.

I have met many more honest down to earth Police officers, than I have honest politicians.

Politicians need the police to be their bully boys - and have since the miners strike.

Even if the police didn't have any damaging revelations about politicians to leak to the press, they just need to suggest that it would be a shame if a lone nutter managed to get past police protection to off a senior politician. Something I am sure they have already mentioned to David Cameron.

Next time he's in public see if he starts looking over his shoulder.

I've a notion I started posting yesterday but, leaving that aside, I'm not suggesting a nod and a wink would be sufficient - more along the lines of where someone has escaped justice as a result of a technicality or CPS/ COPFS incompetence or just a stupid jury verdict, the cops might 'find a way' to rectify the situation.
