i would take that as a sign of interest and consider trying a lot harder with the next message you send back

Need to step up your game my boy! Ask an open question like what would my finger smell like if I was with you?

I always think messages that start how are you are a bit of lazy/ is a stupid question. I'm far more likely to reply if the person contacting me has read my profile and made a considered response. I'm not expecting critical analysis or anything but something a bit more than "how are you" is more likely to spark an interest.

Well it wasn't just how are you, was more to it but just think it's bad manners to not say yes thanks you..

A lazy uninspiring message is likely going to attract a lazy uninspiring reply.

when you go shoppin and the cashier asks if there is anything else they can help you with today, do you ask them if you can help them with anything else?

Manners is answering your question with civility. But you're just some random off the internet so if you don't appeal to them then you're the equivalent of the loony on the bus...

I must have 10 or more of them a day. Replying good thanks is a way of saying get to the point. If you want to chat to me - send a message that took more than 3 seconds to type.

Ok so what are we supposed to say when asked 'how are you?'.

How about a complete run down of my medical history? I really hate that question as an opening message. No one REALLY wants to know the real answer so the only possible answer is 'good thanks'.

The original question wasn't very interesting or original so it's hardly surprising the response isn't either.

The real surprise is that it drew a response at all.

If someone asks me how I am, I would either reply "Fine, thanks." or "Not so good, thanks for asking.", whether via PM on FAB, text, in person face to face, e-mail, via instant messaging, etc. etc...

If that is considered to be rude, then so be it!

"How are you?" On its own is a question I perceive to be familiar, ie- someone I know...not a first message.

You chose to ask them a question. They chose to provide an answer. That was the answer they provided. What's done is done. Nothing more, nothing less.

...at least now you know whether they were the kind of person/people you wanted to be friends with.

My good manners coming into play is what would have prompted me to reply 'we are good thanks x' as I have done many times this evening, the reason I don't add, 'and you?' Is because we aren't interested in further conversation, we could just not reply then we would encounter the no manners because we didn't reply and all business! Cor blimey you can't win unless you are replying please shag me now!
