I'd rather read the book first. Film adaptions tend to leave loads out. Read The Time Traveller's Wife before seeing the film. Glad I did. The film left me thinking wtf!

Kent

I always prefer the book but no one else I know reads much so whenever we go to the cinema I'm the only one who knows what's gonna happen!

It's a bit annoying x

Book then film... Loved the book the time travellers wife, the film was pretty crap in comparison, I thought, but a lot of films I find poo after reading the book.... Don't think it helps that I have decided in my minds eye what the characters look like.... And then the film comes out,.. Eh? That's not what they are supposed to look like!!!!

Read the book and I've noticed that by the time the film comes out the screenwriters have ripped it apart anyway x

I tend to read the books first.

Sometimes, like with Bladerunner, the film is totally different to the book, both were excellent though.

It doesn't actually bother me which way round but generally speaking books are better because they are usually more desciptive and you can let your imagination envisage what is happening where as a film has already had the visuals implemented to they style of the director.

Films that are better than their book counterpart anyone?

For me off the top of my head I would say Fight Club. I am a massive Chuck Palahniuk fan but the book was rather lacking and I thought the film was brilliant. Preferred the film ending too.

Essex.

Hunger Games was pretty close to the book. I'm half way through book 3. Haven't been able to put them down....

I agree. There is a lovely spoof trailer for it on Youtube, that points this out.

I dreaded that film, knew it'd be a steaming crock early on when they started releasing the details. Brad Pitt was the first bad sign.

Sometimes the book can be better than the film (First Blood), and sometimes vice versa (The Warriors).

But sometimes a book reader's expectations can ruin a film (because faithful adaptations would be easier to make but film studios don't see the surprise in that, like readers want a film to not resemble what they read already).
