So, how did the first person to have an STI catch it?

Sorry, random thread! Just curious after having the same conclusion-less (new word!) discussion at work....

I think many evolved from less virulent things and was passed round by travellers.

Where did chickenpox come from or diphtheria?

Actually, I blame everything on fungi. Strange stuff. I'm sure it caused all the diseases just to get rid of us.

I read somewhere that the people who prepared and embalmed mummy's back in ancient times weren't allowed to mix with other people.

It is said that they used to practice necrophilia and that this is where it all started.

If they had kept this practice within their own social group then perhaps the disease wouldn't have spread, but somewhere along the way some of them must have had sex with other people and so it let it loose among the general population.

This might be total bollocks, and it probably is, but it sounds feasible to me ..... well it does after a few bevvies

HIV/AIDS was originally a blood disease passed on through infected cuts when Africans were hunting monkeys and hacking them up for whatever reasons they did.

Monkeys in Africa arent to be fucked with, as anybody who's ever heard of the Ebola virus, for instance, will know.

Then the brighty whiteys went over there during the good old empire days raping everything they could put slave shackles on and that didn't help matters either.

If there's anything can be said for where STI's came from, it came from stupidity, perversion, rape and bloodshed

They all come from the same place as the common cold. Evolution applies to bacteria an viruses as much probably more than it does to mammals fish birds and reptiles.

thing is about siv in apes is that it doesn't cause their immune system to shut down, they live with it,it just passes on to other contacts,I wonder if in the past it did cause a full blown aids disease and only the individuals who had natural immunity to the virus survived and passed that immunity on to their offspring,if so same may happen with us and HIV in a few hundred generations?

Interestingly Longleat Safari Park occasionally have closed their monkey enclosures due to a HIV infection outbreak. It's a blood disease, so can spread like wildfire very quickly.

Isn't that exactly what is happening right now in Africa? It's natural selection, only the strongest survive and the disease is passed from generation to generation. I can guarantee if one of us was plonked out there and lived their lives day to day, we wouldn't last a year...!

Without going into details and at the risk of being shot down, I believe HIV to be a man made virus . Tested in 3rd world countries , as if the poor souls don't have it bad enough

That's right, they're just carriers. And then we have to take into consideration that so many diseases werent discovered until we had to tech to find them properly and even then, AIDS and HIV are already a global pandemic. Its true.

Its an STI and it's also passed from human to human by accidents, by violence and by drug users sharing needles.

AIDS could still end up being our very own modern day pneumonic plague or something similar, providing it mutated beyond the grasp of modern medicine.

It's been around for hundreds of years so I doubt that but genetic wise it's a close gene of SIV which is found in monkeys

thing is in the past almost every disease they didn't understand that killed folk was labelled as "consumption" which covered things like TB,Cancer and who knows possibly aids? it could have been around in small numbers for centuries

As for being man made, there were rumours it was started by the Vietcong who infected the prostitutes who in turn infected US gi's ,but that was discounted pretty early on after the virus(es) were isolated and identified

Without answering the question (as I can't) my main worry is there will never be a cure. Not because the research, technology or funding does not exist,.. it does.

MY worry is the people that run the money behind the medical/chemical firms behind the research (the cure) will think to themselves "Why make a cure with a one-off payday, when you can create/sell medicine that lets people 'manage' their lives with the illness.. and they keep paying you for the rest of their lives?"

Cynical, I know.. but not untrue.

Brighton - even Hove!

Bacteria and viruses mutate or 'evolve' and from one non damaging bacterium or virus, you get one that does damage so as it is thought mutations happen because of radiation and most of ours comes from the sun, then the answer is the sun.
