Boardwalk Empire is a pretty nice series and definitely worth a watch.

The Wire was absolutely fantastic but I think you have to pay a bit more attention to it (over something like Dexter) as if you miss a small part of the dialogue you may not really be able to follow bits. I recommended it to my mum and she couldn't get on with it at all.

I love premium cable TV.

Boardwalk Empire is worth watching periodic setting and well done its graphic with its violence so be warned if you are eating. Far better than most US imports like Dexter, Fringe and the appalling show the wire. Try Boardwalk it may surprise you.

Seriously, the Wire is one of the best written and acted shows of the last 2 decades!!

Boardwalk is good and i keep enjoying it, but it is starting to run out of steam and become a bit disjointed with its writing.

Its no where at the level of The West Wing, Sopranos, The Newsroom, The Wire or Breaking Bad.

Also programmes to hunt out from the states and less well known are -

House of Cards - Kevin Spacey

Boss - Kelsey Grammer

Scandal -

Longmire

Under the Dome - bit like Lost

Revenge - loses its way in second series a bit.

So worth watching but can be bloody. Season 4, judging from the trailers on You tube is shaping up to be as good as season 3.

I think that is just the danger of when a series goes on for too long. I haven't actually seen The West Wing so can't comment.

Also, add Deadwood to the list. Probably won't be everyones cup of tea but it is an amazing series (only two were made) and Ian McShane absolutely steals the show. I watched it through without realising they wouldn't make another one (they stopped to make Rome) and was absolutely gutted when I found out.

The west wing finished many years ago so how it has become wishy washy is a wierd statement to make , thought it was fantastically written and acted, yes it was many series and you will have times when it isnt at its best but as a series taken as a whole was fantastic.

Boardwalk has since the middle of the second series till and including this 4th series not flowed and added too many characters to the original 6/7 protagonists and tried to flesh out all their story lines and its not working. unlike most multi season series the 2/3/4th are usually when they are at its best boardwalk has gone off the boil unfortunately compared to its early episodes which were amazing!!

Agree about 'The West Wing' ,but disagree about 'Broadwalk Empire'. For me, the show has maintained its standards and as clear and product of love and 'no expense spared' production.

Seasons 1-4 of the wire were fantastic...though I felt a lull atthe beginning of season 2... The 5th season was the weakest...the storyline in parts was a little too far fetched.. Nonetheless, collectively it's one of the best written shows I've seen... The verbal exchanges are second to none and virtually every character leaves an impression.

Absolutely. I class 'The Wire' as one of the finest, if not the finest TV series ever written.

The wire was ok but really the best? The Sopranos and Deadwood not to mention Breaking Bad topped it. I did like The Wire but it was the acting that was better than the script for me.

For me, I've rarely seen dialogue between actors in any tv show appear as genuine, natural and textured as i saw in the wire. Even Baltimore acted well, and she didn't even have a spoken part.

Breaking bad is great too..and I'm half way through it.. It's very different to the wire...but fantastic nonetheless

I agree about the production values they are second to none, and the show is good just not great since the middle of season 2 feel there are just too many characters coming and going to keep the continuity properly flowing, have nearly given up watching a few times if honest.
