With Immigration being so high. There is an argument/debate going on at the moment should immigrants who live in England be allowed to play for England or should it be an all English team and the main question is would foreign players make England a better team.

It is a good way to involve minority groups though and people who want to belong here and become part of Britain. I would rather have one of them if they have the passion for Britain than a half arsed born here guy like Rio Ferdinand with his attitude to playing or the 3 lions.

As stated on the other thread the answer is the passport. If you haven't got a UK passport you shouldn't be on the team.

Every team in the world does that! Not just the scots. It's using the players parentage. I think they can go as far back as great grandparents or something.

If you went on passport then you would really have to have a British team so that one is out. Its either place of birth or residency (7years or more) for me if you are going to draw lines.

i think its very insulting to people that have come over from other countries, lived here for many years, and consider themselves English, to say 'you may think your English, be a part of your community, and contribute to your economy, but you just arent english enough im afraid'.

why is the English football team the last bastian of the great Arien race?

even germany have 'immigrants' playing for them ffs!!!

next we will be goosestepping out to the centre circle (yes, a little extreme, but its just as pathetic as the stance made)

berahino, playing for albion, born in somalia, or some war torn country, came over as a kid, considers himself english enough to play for the under 21's

same with zaha

barnes, and so on.

this has all blown up from an 18 year old Belgian, that no one actually knows if he is interested, but look, he has to be here 5 years before claiming residency anyway, so, if he is prepared to wait until he is 21 to play international football for this country, then, thats good enough for me.

thats shows more commitment to this countries national team than a few born and bred Englishmen have in the past.

and, finally, as an island race, there is NO such thing as pure bred English.

we are all born of immigrant or invaders, so basically, there IS no national team!

I suppose I have a personal interest in this one.

My soon to be born grandson will be born in Singapore to English parents, but he could claim to have a bit of Irish from his paternal great grandparents. Eventually it is likely that the family will settle in Australia, so should my grandson develop into a top sportsman, who would he play for?

Lots of double standards around my first instinct is to say no and using footy as example i want strong england team i aint bothered about premier league as such due to amount of overseas players and i do not care how its dressed up it stifles chances of english players.

Regarding immigrants playing for england then if the player was brought over as a child and lives here then yes but if the ommigrant came over as adult then no they should not be considered.

I was starting to get caught up in this debate when I read this and came to my senses!

I'm afraid the "national pride" of football is a bit of a farce. If you compare it to rugby where they've had world cup stars who were born in South Africa or Samoa there hasn't been half of the "oh why can't they all be born in the confines of the English borders crap". They hurl themselves into the fray for their country but far more importantly for their team mates. If the England football team fought as hard for each other let alone a flag they might get somewhere. Football is a totally self centred sport where being the best player is far more important than winning or being a team player sadly. Should immigrants play for England in football? Yes, if they're a team player and that also goes for ones born in England!

You never get British passport after 5 years been here.

Rules are like also pass exam - English language with 12 TENSES, history, and Im so sorry I dont want be rude..English people use only max. 4 tenses and don't have idea about 8 others. Only maybe the teachers,so..Foregineers must to know about all of them ! Also work here, don't use any kind of government support like taxes, paid aprox £1300 for passport.

I feeling sick when I read question like that. Maybe also we should ask about why English people play in teams in other countries? Why they work in other countries and they are not discriminate? They are treat like normal people. I should ask why my English neighbours live in my country? Give them a sample of questions like that? They are on pension from UK and they are live now near my home in Italy.

Born and Bred is a clear line of thought for some people. So, if you arrive at 1 week old and are now 22 never lived anywhere else in the world, consider yourself English, only speak English, only ever played for an English club and have two English Parents then it's still a no?

What about those born abroad who's parents were in the military or who were working there at the time? Still a no?

Perhaps we should take that all the way through to league football, so unless you were born in Leeds, you can't play for them?

imo, if someone is proud to represent the flag, and the country, then they should be allowed, no matter where they were born.

look at all the lads that play for african countries, whose parents were born there, but they were born here, just because they have no chance, or a slimmer chance, of playing for this country.

should we be getting onto them because they are pretty much stating they like ivory coast/nigeria/sth africa and so on, more than the country they were born in?

look at all the lads that play for african countries, whose parents were born there, but they were born here, just because they have no chance, or a slimmer chance, of playing for this country.

should we be getting onto them because they are pretty much stating they like ivory coast/nigeria/sth africa and so on, more than the country they were born in?

Yes if they're BRITISH!!! Been going on years this. Rugby's a big advocate of this philosophy. The likes of New Zealand and Australia poaching Pacific Islanders. Mathew Stevens England tight head South African. Think Mo Farrah was Somali. Kevin Pietersen South African.

Basically if you're British, hold a British passport, you ain't gonna stop someone turning out for the home country they choose.

I wonder if the same people saying they can't play for England because they weren't born here, would complain if those same players didn't support England when they played in the world cup?

I wasn't born here, I was born in Canada and I'm not British or English, my children are dual nationality, I've lived all over the world and as a rule, if I watch football I support Brazil (no point supporting Canada) or the underdog unless England is playing then I support England. In Rugby I support Canada, England and the Underdog in any given match, In Ice Hockey (or Hockey as we call it) I support Canada. Life isn't as black and white (or English and other) as people would like.

Actually it's not that clear cut.

Great Britain is made up of Wales, Scotland and England and then add Northern Ireland and you've got you've got the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Technically England, Scotland, N. Ireland and Wales aren't countries reccognised internationally (you don't get an English passport) but at the same time they are countries. For example there is not English Government (not since 1707) so it has not global representation.

If you were born in this country I don't care where your past generations where from, you're English and that should entitle you to play for our national side.

If they allow foreigners to represent England in the future, that makes a mockery of the whole system. The clue is in the name England, some things are best left as they are and if foreigners are introduced one day,I for one will not follow them again.

Athletics is different it's a GB team, not exclusively English. As for cricket and other sports like many footie fans in this country,I couldn't give a flying fuck.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone representing England in whatever sport if they perceive themselves to be English , or British for that matter. It's only a bloody game after all. In my 45 odd years living here I can count on one hand the number of people I have met who can claim to be 100% English anyway.

Ok my personal view, bearing in mind I am not a football fan is this:

UK football clubs should only have UK born players that can legitimately hold a UK passports, as it is now all Premier League teams have foriegn players and some teams are made up of lots of them so arent we in a situation already where UK teams are international teams? Makes a mockery of the European Cup doesnt it cos its just 2 international teams palying each other, not a UK team playing a German or Spanish team for example?

I appreciate this theory is full of loop holes etc and I am braced for tons of abuse but as said... not a football fan so just a point of view

It would have to be on the basis that they came to this country as a "child" ie under 16 have attended school here and been absorbed into the youth football and then into club football ...

Nope, because they were born to British parents, who work on British land - on the basis are entiltled to a British Passport - however it gets a little bit more complicated when you have a serviceperson married to a local - as dual citizenship is still a little grey area ....

What a strange thing to say! It's not about race at all!

Anyway.... My problem with the current rules is that a player can play for a country at international level all the way from youth to under 21's and then if he isn't good enough for the senior squad he can then change his mind and play for a different nation. In my view, they should be able to pick from the countries they're eligible to represent at say.. 18 and from then on be unable to change.

Hargreaves was about to be capped by Wales when Howard Wilkinson realised and named him in an England squad.

I'm trying to remember whether he played for any Wales age groups.

I can't believe people are saying you have to be BORN in a country to represent them. That would have ruled our so many stars over the years.

I have many Welsh friends who weren't born here, but are 100% Welsh. On the opposite side of it, try telling my mate who was born in Wales to two cockney parents he couldn't represent England!

"Perhaps I need educating then Fabio. Does this mean the FA could be potentially overruled by FIFA regarding player selection ? Can't believe Sepp Blatter would do anything to piss off us English even more "

no... what it means is that you have to have a passport for the country you are competing for, and you must meet the minimum requirements for nationality for that country.... be that thru Ancestry or Residency

what they can do is add certain rules on top... so for example in the case of football, FIFA say you can not have represented another country... which is not the same for athletics (IAAF) or Cycling (UCI) for example

the player in question at the moment who made this question arise, Adnan Januzaj, actually hasn't played international football at any level for anyone... which makes it such an interesting case

as it stands at the moment, the player would not meet the requirements to play for England under the unique rules set out in the Home nations agreement. The Home nations agreement requires that players engage in a minimum of five years education under the age of 18 within the territory of the relevant association and do not offer national team eligibility through residency.

it is the residency issue that is now being discussed, in the uk at the moment the residency rule to get a british passport is 7 years... which i why he would be potentially eligable is march 2018

Yes. Where is the pride to play for your OWN Country? I say they should be exempt apart from armed forces. Simply as if want live here should be willing to fight also"

i shake my head at the stupidity of this post, i really do.

you are happy for 'johnny foreigner' to fight, and spill his/her blood for your safety, in your name, but you wont let him kick a bag of wind around a piece of grass?

holy shit!!

this thread is really really opening my eyes to peoples opinions on this island.

wish some mp's were swingers on here, cuz they would get a shock at some of the attitudes being displayed

"His family fled Kosovo for Belgium. He sees himself as Kosovan, but they don't have a international team.

That's " tough " on his part.

No way should he play for, England. "

"tough"?

So do you think if he lived here for a period of time you'd want him to support the England team? or should he never do that either?

You really expect any different on here??? you are talking to people who pull the chair up to the 50in plasma have their England shirts on and imagine its them on the grass. They put cammo gear on to play Call of Duty too you can't expect them to pretend they are a guy with a foreign name while they are armchair footballing it.

but to say you are happy to see some bloke die in your name, but not kick a football around, brings whole new meaning to being up your own arse.

i really honestly cant get my head round it.

now i know why the campaign for the Ghurkas to settle here took so long, with such intraspective views.

"I'm not sure. If a person qualifies for citizenship because they have been here fir five years then they get a British passport. So surely that qualifies them to play for Scotland , Wales and NI as well. Who gets to chose who has them. ?

Open mind needed not only in sex lol. And guys more empathy !

But would your neighbours be welcome to represent Italy in the next World Cup?? "

italian rugby team already have Australian Luke McLean playing for them

Joking apart its pretty disrespectful and a lot of the serving and guys who have served on here won't view it well and that's not a good position to be in frankly. You will always get the ones who think unless you are born here and have 4 generations plus lineage you dont belong its the dont come over here taking my job its my mop and my floor attitude which is pretty sad.

"With Immigration being so high. There is an argument/debate going on at the moment should immigrants who live in England be allowed to play for England or should it be an all English team and the main question is would foreign players make England a better team."

That's superb! Cammo gear on for Call of Duty! Laughed my arse off

As for the football kit, on twitter there's a feed called "fullkitwankers" which has candid shots of people wearing full kit (socks included) to the shops etc, it's hilarious
