Well "God save the Queen/King" is a bloody depressing dirge. I would prefer an anthem to be about the country rather than an individual.You can be a patriot without being a Royalist. So what would like like to hear?

I disagree, I have heard the Alcester Male Voice Choir sing it- very uplifting.

"God save the queen" is only anthem by custom, not ruling.

Personally we like "Jerusalem". Maybe drop Prince Charles a line about changing it when he takes the throne. He did a (fascinating) documentary a couple of years back about the guy who wrote the music - Charles Hubert Parry. So he'd probably be in favour.

Sorry bud, but the flower of scotland IS our anthem! We're only stuck with the gsoq one at events such as the olympics! A bit like the getting stuck with the winner of the x-factor at x-mas! Its only for a week or two!

If this country got rid of its current national anthem for anything new, you wouldn't get a choice in the matter.

What would they use? A cringy UK Eurovision entry-style song? A football song? Brian May (although I like Brian May and Queen, it wouldn't be the same)?

I read it as a raised fist against industrialisation, bad working conditions, a kind of socialist anthem, really. Transpose that to the present day, and it's more like 'lots of things will have to change before England is again a 'green and pleasant land'.

But that's my take on it.
