Pothole "Epidemic"???

So potholes on our roads are making the news again. Apparently there is 1 pot whole for every mile in Britain.

Do you suffer with them on the roads you travel? Have you damaged your car/bike/cycle because of them?

I tend to know where they are on the roads that I regularly travel, so if its safe to do so, I dodge them, or drive slowly over them. Not damaged my car yet *touch wood*.

Some of the problem is they fill in the holes with some sort of quick setting stuff that is back out again as soon as we get heavy rain or frosts rather than resurfacing the whole section of road that is breaking up .

Have damaged car and in the village I live a good stretch of road was resurfaced a few years ago on a slight hill.In the middle of the road where they join the 2 sides it all just deteriorated into one long pot hole almost and has again just been resurfaced. What a waste of our cash!!!!

A colleague of mine hit a very large pothole which broke her front axle. It was dark and wet, and the hole just looked like a puddle. She took photos the next day once it was light which was lucky as soon after it had been filled in and she would have had trouble making a claim. In the end her whole car was written off.

The problem is that according to the TV councils have paid out £2.5 million in claims for damage caused by potholes. This means that it is far cheaper for them to pay claims than repair the roads.

More people need to claim then we might see some repairs done.

The problem you have claiming is that they will say it hasn't been reported yet and therefore they are not liable. Of course, if the hole has been marked for repair they can't use this as a defence.

Just did the school run and another section of resurfaced road is the same as the above.Why do they need to split the road when resurfacing? wouldn't it make more sense to start at one end and resurface the entire width and close the road until completed.

The roads are shocking near where I live. On one stretch, you can tell the people who live local because they weave the route to avoid the holes. Some of the holes have been filled with the quick fix solution but it just seems to dissolve.

I hit a pot hole on the M60 near Stockport a few weeks ago, I thought my wheel may have cracked or broke, but had it checked and no damage - it sent a shockwave through the car when I hit it though, not nice at 70mph.

We applied for the mineral rights in our cul-de-sac - it looks more like an open cast mine than a road.

It's definitely a regional thing though. We live near in Birmingham, but near Worcestershire. There are local roads there that have been resurfaced 3 times in 10 years, while equivalent roads in Brum just get a bit of black stuff thrown in.

Some towns are rolling out a fix my city phone app.

Take a pic of a pothole or fly tipping etc and it gets the GPS attached and sent to the local authority.

You get a receipt so they can't deny knowledge.

Dont forget that if a pothole damages your car/bike you are entitled to compensation from the council/highways agency and that they all have multi million pound funds to cover such claims.

Seems its cheaper to pay out to those who do claim than fix the roads!

So carry a measuring stick and use your phone cameras to record the size depth and location of offending pothole plus damage to your tires/wheels/bodywork and everyone claim!

Make it cheaper to fix the roads than pay for the damage caused by poor road maintenance.

The reason for the joint line down the middle is simple.

The machine is only that wide.

If they used your suggested method,you would have the same problem every 10-15 feet going across, along the entire road.

The problem you describe is called surface stripping,and is because it has just been overlaid without proper preparation.

I'm sick of the bloody things where I live. The same ones are being patched up virtually every two weeks rather than being repaired properly.

So far this year I've had to replace a nearside upper wishbone arm, both front drop links and the flexi section of my exhaust due to damage cause by potholes or oversized speed humps.

Thankfully I can do these jobs myself and it gives me the opportunity to fit up-rated parts.

It was said last year they wait till they get so many claims before fixing as it can be cheaper. There was a bloke last year who went round filling holes himself he got that fed up.

I have done in the past, they're generally slow to pay out and their 'qualified' technicians that inspect the damage are far from that! I find that because I drive an Alfa they like to blame the car rather than the shocking state of the roads.

Sick of the shitting things I ride a motorbike to and from work and the skint of times I've nearly come off is unbelievable some are more pot grooves there about 12 foot long so you try change lane on the bike and can't get out of it until the groove ends
