best man speech

I've got a wedding this weekend.

He was engaged once before but never married.I was to be best man at that wedding.

Would a joke about the best man speech along the lines of allready having a speech I wrote 10 years ago,and changing a few names be appropriate?

Were they just engaged or did the wedding get organised etc then cancelled?? I'm assuming his spouse to be knows about the previous engagement.

If you want to run the risk of wrecking the wedding day carry on.couldn't you just make a few innocuous jokes? It's not about you being a really funny person and the centre of attention.. Leave well alone and don't risk anything controversial. It's their day not yours.

He started his speach by looking over to the grooms family and friends and saying.. ' its nice to see you all again'

You obviously know them both very well.. Would it be likely to offend or would they see the funny side?? Usually, best man etiquette says steer clear of ex jokes and sex jokes!!

I was the best man at a wedding a week ago. I mentioned his psycho exs, the one who just wanted a kid and picked him as a likely father (if you saw him, you would question her taste) and generally, but gently put the boot in. I avoided anything to do with his wife and it went down very well.

I was best man at my best friends wedding last year. My speech had comedy references to Thai mail order brides.

Until that day I'd never met my mates dad, who happened to be married to a Thai lady! Thank god he had a sense of humour about it...

You have a remit to embarrass the groom but courtesy demands that you don't humiliate the bride in the process.

If it would make your mum or nan give you a 'look' then don't use it (I know they probably won't be there but use that as a guide).

I have been married 3 times. My mate has been best man twice. He virtually used the same speech for both, and also at his dads wedding.... I guess its eco-friendly, recycling and all that!
