Now I can see how the landed gentry and the aristrocracy/royals etc are "upper class" but to be "middle" or "working class" is puzzling. Is it purely a case of how much cash you have(or total wealth)? I'e is Wayne Rooney now upper middle class cos he has more assets than most supposedly middle class people. So how does it work?

To me the class system died a death long ago.

It's just another pointless labelling system that people will never agree on!

A system for some people to pigeonhole other people. Very out of date and very out of touch with a modern society. Or simply a load of old bollox

Class has very little to do with money, its about breeding, genetics and attitude.

Some people have it, some don't. I don't think it has bugger all to do with money.

Where we live we have an Asda next to an M&S.

Now this is purely... observational. But go into each shop and *listen* to the sounds of people talking.

The class system is alive and well.

My housekeeper is one of the classiest ladies I know,

Her father was a diplomat, and she inherited his brains, style and class.

She is a very wealthy woman, having homes in several countries.

Her class isn't about wealth, its about compassion and empathy with any sentient being.

Likewise my mother was the snobbiest person I've ever known even when we were forced to live in the scummiest housing estate in town.

Nowadays my friends include one of the wealthiest women in the country who happily chats about the things she's been able to salvage from skips.

Both have class in their own particular ways

Im working class and will always be so. If I won a huge pot on the euromillions,i would still be working class. You can't buy class,it's something we are born into.

I've mixed with the upper classes and from what I've experienced,im happy to be working class. I spoke to a lady once who didn't even know what a kebab was, made me laugh anyways lol

To say someone 'has' class has nothing to do with the 'class' they were born into.

The class system is alive and well.

I'd rather my daughers married pauper brains and hearts than rich dickheads.

When there are people in the country wondering where their next meal is coming from, and others wondering where they can get some ethically sourced organic brie, then there is still a class system at work.

At least in people's heads.

That's far from true. Some are just more discreet in what they see.

It doesn't work life and social standing in a community is far more complex than a 3 tier system of the past well that's if you but into the whole thing and frankly more don't than do these days.

There's a quaint little place in Islington that does mail order. And if you're ever in the area they have poetry recitals most mornings over some fairtrade guava tea and ricecakes.

Interestingly there was an article in the paper about class. According to the article the following are the 7 classes in Britain.

Elite

Established Middle Class

Technical Middle Class

New Affluent Workers

Traditional working Class

Emergent Service Workers

Precariat

In my opinion class has nothing to do with wealth, qualifications or where you live.

It is a measure of attitude, manners and education (not book learning) and ability to mix with others.

It is something you have or lack...

New classification. ...

Thoose who are selfish and expect things done or given to them are known as; takers.

Those who help make things happen and do things for themselves are known as; improvers

Those who are not in the above categories are; floaters.
