A Secret Hideaway In the caravan of love

I smile at strangers all the time. When I'm out walking the dogs I tend to talk to or at least smile at other dog walkers.

I find people in general avoid eye contact, but when you actually do get to make it (usually with a girl), smiling at them usually receives one in return, and often a quiet 'hi!' along with it.

haha well I live in the country so it's expected.

If there's eye contact - yes, of course. Sometimes with a nod, or even a 'Hiya!'

If someone gives me right of way or lets me cross the road, and I'm in the mood, I tend to put my hands together in prayer fashion and slightly dip my head - the reactions are great: some burst out laughing, or smile and wave, and quite a few will reciprocate the gesture.

I used to take groups of inner city kids for countryside activities. Their reactions to countryside etiquette was always amusing. And how shit scared they'd get in the woodland

It always amuses me that when in the country or on holiday people say morning or smile with a hello ... And if you were to see the same people in the streets in london they would think you were a nutter if you did the same !! But yes I try and make eye contact with people and give a smile most of the time

The other day at work. I smiled at a customer and asked if she was okay and needed help.

She turned around and goes, does it look like im struggling and did i ask for help.

that must have been some really bad customer service from me lol

...im not smiling again. She was following me all over the bloody store too!

I'm a black cab driver and I am always smiling at people in London. The look of astonishment on some peoples faces is hilarious but quite a few do smile back, but sometimes when I say hello to strangers they do look genuinely frightened.

yes, have always when the situation allowed tried to communicate with other people wherever and in which country i've been in..

worked in London for over 20 ish yrs and even there most people will reciprocate..

think the perception is within 'big cities' that your not meant to interact as were all too busy, but pretty much of the mind that all people have the same aims in life, health, kids the weather!, communication does break down 'barriers'..

also find with walking our dogs that there is a good rapport with nearly everyone who does the same..

Other dog walkers aren't really strangers, they're a bit of a kindred spirit - a bit like people out pushing a baby in a buggy.

They're both perfect ice-breakers and you get lots of Brownie points if you offer to take a pal's newborn out for a few hours so they can have some 'them' time

I travel alot around the country and i can honestly say there is a north south divide alive and kicking

certain thing book the trend

Walking dogs - other dog walker tend to acknowledge each other

walkers - also say hi

Dogging works wherever you are ... always will to say hi to a naked person -)

I cycle a lot and find other cyclists will always nod or raise their hand to you, also people outside of the town when walking will also shout "morning" or "hello" as you cycle by them.

Maybe its the inner city environment that causes some to be head-down non communicators

Normally the elderly and babies lol

I remember one day a few years ago I was walking down the road and saw an elderly lady sitting on a bench, as I walked past she looked up and I smiled at her then she smiled and said to me, thank u my dear, was feeling very down and u have just brightened up my day with your lovely smile!!

Nearly brought me to tears lol but I thanked her and carried on, was so nice!
