The land of grey peas and bacon

So I am becoming a boring sod some weekends and the nights are drawing in...so I have decided to embark on the journey of making things...

So I need ideas on pickles and chutneys

I just saw James Martin make rhubarb chutney this morning and it looked lovely.

I just ate some ham that I had cooked with some piccalilli....it was a bit vinegary

My late Mother's apple chutney recipe is

1lb apples

½ lb raisins

½ lb sugar

½ pint vinegar

2 teaspoons ginger

1 onion

½ teaspoon peppercorns

½ teaspoon salt

Chop apples and onions finely and simmer the whole lot for 1 hour.

that's where it stops. I dunno what you do after that, 'cept stick it in sterilised jars.

I saw a pear and walnut one on Sunday brunch earlier which looked nice, not my thing but said it tasted quite seasonal so ideal for this time of year!

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstalls Glutney is easy and always turns out well. I made my own piccalilli once and it was lovely. I've also done pickled onions (far too strong!), and different flavoured pickled eggs. Yum!

...if you have king prawns and mussels in your house with an addition of broccoli and carrots etc. You can make a nice meal out of it. Add in some brown rice and green beans. With some mixed pickle from a jar and some chilli.

It is lush.

Anyone need a cook soon? I can only make that and lasagne and shephards pie and some cake though.
