Bradford

I am getting a early birthday present next week, but can't decide what to get.

All it will be used for is to surf the Internet whilst laid in bed (watching tv), playing with apps and listening to music when out.

Or should I hold off till the next nexus phone is announced at the end of the month?

side note

I don't honestly think that 16gb is big enough size wise for anyone... so if you are getting one, make sure you have the capacity to extend the size using a size card if you have to...

Asking as someone who survived happily with a 15 year old Nokia until a few months ago, what's the advantage of extra memory?

Room for more photos? More music?

1... even though it will say "16gb" that wont be 16gb of useable memory.....for example apples ios and apps you cant put on it mean that your 16gb is actually about 13gb you can use for yourself...

2.... the rule of thumb is that 1gb is about 250-300 songs... so unless your collection is a bit small, again you start using memory rather quickly....

3... if it is being a big kid for games, the better the game and graphics, the higher the gb's made to produce the game... for example... fifa 14, although free to download and play, needs 1.5gb of space to use.... games are tending to get larger and larger in size.....

the "day to day" apps don't tend to be that large.. but the luxury ones can eat up a whole lot of space rather quickly...

So, to paraphrase, unless you want lots of music and games, 16gb will do.

Yes?

actually... not really.... the one thing you find is that you will use it for a lot more than you think...

for example.... use it as a book reader.. more space

use it as a sat nav.... more space....

I dont consider my music collect to be "that" big.... but it still uses 4-5 gbs....

want to listen to podcasts... more gbs on off that...

photos.... the odd game....

i wish everyone was as disciplined as you seem to be... I would not only regret have bought something with slighty lower memory space... but it also gives you flexability as well

the new nexus 7 is awesome, the old one its brilliant also. I have use of both and a ipad3 and a ipod5 and the nexus is the better tablet, if you can go for the 32gb model, that is of course your thinking of using it to store music/video/photos

In Your Hearts

Got a Nexus 7 16gb. Bought an OTG cable from fleabay (£2.50) and downloaded a 'Nexus Media Importer' (approx £3) Apps - this means that you can attach an USB Memory Stick and vastly expand capacity.

Really worth it. Hope this is useful.

It's not discipline. Whilst I love music, on the few occasions I've listened via a phone or an iPod, the quality has been so bad I've not wanted to do it again.

Neither if you are going to use a lot of media on get one that you can insert a micro SD card then you are not going to be limited.

Calne

If it's going to be home based, then memory might not be as important. I have a massive music collection (well over 500GB), but don't store any of it on my Nexus 7. Neither do I store any of my terabytes of photos. Instead I stream them over my network as required. eBooks take up very little space, as do most apps. Only if you need to be taking your music/photos with you do you need to be looking at large storage.

Check out the new Tesco tablet...specs look great for the price.
