I'm on a budget, so I bought a whole chicken and crowned it for roasting, I used the legs in a home made, tomato, pepper, chilli, (all from my greenhouse )pineapple and mango (from the fridge) sauce. And I boiled up the carcass and have a proper chicken soup for tomorrow

The kids and I picked blackberries and used apples and raspberries from the garden and did a pie & we sploshed that with home made custard Not bad for a fiver

Yep all I had to buy was a chicken and a vanilla pod I'm gutted though as now I'm out of tomatoes from my greenhouse I am so going to go to the trouble again next year, peppers, tomatoes, chilli and cucumber and next year my raspberries, red, black and white currants, should give me a really good crop

I think it depends what stores you have. Had I had to buy everything, it wouldn't have come in anywhere near as cheap.

My herb garden went nuts this year, and I will insure I invest again next year on the garden. I also planted a cherry tree this year so am really looking forward to cherry pies next year Hmmm think I will google and see about growing vanilla out there

Of course it would have been more expensive if you had to buy all the ingredients however my 'living on a budget' comment was referring to your grow your own efforts...putting in the work rather than whining about the cost of food as some do.

Also the fact it is your own work makes it taste all the better.

Regarding the cherry tree..how mature is the one you're planting? How old are they before they fruit? Interested to know.... :thumb:

Over the summer, at points, I've really hated running up to the greenhouse morning and night but it has paid off

I ordered a cherry tree at 2 foot and planted it much earlier this year. (It's a dwarf) but I got a dwarf (or patio) apple and we got a good 30 apples off it this year (third year, I got it in memory of my grandad)

I actually went mad on the garden Tomatoes (beef and cherry) cucumber, pepper, chilli and grape in the greenhouse, with lettuce and beetroot part of the time on shelves.

In the main garden I planted 10 strawberry plants in various containers (which have produced 30 more plants and now have half a side to themselves)

I planted 9 types of mint, coriander, parsley, thyme, curry and chives.

4 raspberry bushes, black, red and white currant bushes, and the cherry tree.

(kids, so I wanted them to go out and harvest the fruit)

I'd love to plant spuds and onions, but I really dont have the strength to be digging the soil over, the time, nor the space anymore and I tried a pumpkin but it failed

My little boy runs out and checks the strawberries daily and now is pointing at the raspberries (he learnt they bite back) but having googled the vanilla I see that wont work so I might try a plum tree next year

If I start uploading pics of me in odd places lol

Some of us have nowhere to grow fruit and veg, and certainly don't have anywhere to plant trees. It's not always about lack of effort.

My 'patio apple' came in to my house for the last few winters, it was no bigger than my pot plants It was only when I got this huge back garden just over a year ago, I had to start gardening (Which meant taking pics of plants and asking my grandma which were poisonous)

I've always had herbs on window sills and even toms and peppers before on the taller kitchen window but now I've been let loose on a huge back garden

Sounds a good variety of fruit and veg....wasn't aware of the dwarf fruit trees....might look into that myself.

It's great the little one is showing an interest...he could be the answer to the onions and potatoes as he grows in strength.
