"A programme to vaccinate schoolchildren against flu has been delayed in Glasgow after concerns from Muslim parents that it contains products derived from pork."

That's ALL school kids NOT getting a potentially lifesaving vaccination because SOME parents think it MIGHT contain pork derived products.

Once again the minority trying to rule shows they place more value on a slight unproven risk compared to health of their children. Not really suprised anymore.

The decision to deny all children is not being taken by the Muslims but the health Authorities. The Muslim kids should be left out of the programme if that is what their parents wish. The authorities should treat the rest.

In the end Religions, all religions, are social control mechanisms (like Governments) and all that is happening here is the Muslims are following their faith. Personally I would prefer an atheist world when judgements were made on tangible fact and balanced judgement based on the very latest evidence not the hearsay of 2000 years ago.

While I do get the sarcasm, it is of course a train of thought that, sadly, many will have.

I do vividly recall the fact that 20 years ago every 40+ in my town had to have a polio jab because this disease had recurred thanks to a whole group of die-hard Christians who had refused to have their offspring inoculated for years on heaven knows what appalling grounds. The jab I had as a child was considered no longer resistant to the new outburst of polio.

Can't individuals simply opt out of having the vaccination?

Just send a letter out with yes/no on it and treat everyone accordingly. Or would the use of paper upset the greenies too much?

Why aren't these things simple anymore?

Vaccinations don't work that way. They don't provide instant immunity. The idea is to cover such a percentage of the population to make it harder for an epidemic to spread. A vaccination makes it *less likely* a person will contract the disease, not guarantee they won't.

This is why when the vaccination *rate* for MMR dropped below whatever (80%) there was a risk of an epidemic in the general population. But hey, as long as little Johnnys parents felt they did the right thing who cares about anybody else.

Public health is, in my opinion, one of the greatest unsung saviours of modern life. Clean water. Decent sanitation, and a targeted programme of vaccinations have saved millions of lives, and prevented untold human misery due to death and disability. Which is why it was so irresponsible for it to be questioned by a tabloid-led media frenzy, rather than a carefully considered scientific study.

You cannot blame the Muslims for this: blame the idiots stopping all children getting the flu jab/spray because some don't want it. Would they have stopped the MMR because some parents had concerns? Of course not.

The flu vaccine *is* derived from pigs, since it will cover swine flu too. People do know it's a cocktail of vaccines against the most common dangerous types of flu ?

Oh, and a milliseconds Wiki-ing gets:

The Qur'anic basis for the Islamic prohibition of pork can be found in suras 2:173, 5:3, 5:60, 6:145 and 16:115.

Chapter (Sura) 2 - Verse (Ayat) 173 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

"He has forbidden you only the Maitah (dead animals), and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then there is no sin on him. Truly, Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful."

that is a sweeping emotive farcical mythical statement that is not worthy of reply! Other than to state that no child of any colour or ethnicity is being put at risk - there is merely a short delay in activating vaccination. If you have an issue with the decision then that should be addressed to the relevant health authority and not the affected community

see... that is the daily mail sensationalist approach the OP has taken to posting stories.....

looked it this... what has actually happen is they the way it was actually going to deliver the vaccine (via a nasal type spray) contains Jellotine, which yes is a derivitive of pork... and it was not just the muslim parents who brought it up... it was also jewish parents and the school authorities....

so all that is happening is that there is a weeks delay so they can get the needle versions in so they can all be given it together.....

when the story is put like that.... its not so menacing...

Aaah, now I've got to the end of the thread different slant on the story than given by the op! "

As I've often said, always best to read the whole thread before posting
