Benidorm

My laptop switches on then goes o a blue screen and starts to dump

It then shuts down

When i start it up again it says start in repair mode or normal i have tried both but the dame thing happens

I do have anti virus and i didn't get a disk when i bought it new i have backed it up so if i can format it back to factory setting i wont lose anything

I don't know what to do any help?

I'm no expert but I'd say hardrive has gone if you are getting the blue screen of death.

Some techies will be along shortly I hope.

You OS could be corrupted, which means you'll need to reinstall it. There should be a rescue partition on your hard drive if you didn't get a rescue disk.

Be warned though, if you do try to instalt the OS from the rescue partition you'll loose everything...

F12 start in safe mode then do a system restore.

When you boot up hit F8 a load until you get the menus list. Choose recovery console (or similar, can't remember what the win 7 equivalent is). I'm hoping it loads a command prompt screen.

Type chkdsk c: /f /r

Hit enter. This will run a check on your system files and for any bad sectors on the drive then attempt to repair any errors. Maybe also check that your ram hasn't come unseated too.

Ideally it would help to know the crash code its displaying on the blue screen.

Dont automatically assume its a dead laptop, it could be something as simple as a corrupted driver or as complicated as a fried memory stick.

Have you done any driver updates just before the crash happened the first time?

At what point during the start up does it blue screen and dump, is it after the post screen or after the splash screen

This indeed! If the code disappears quickly use a camera to grab a pic of it so you can look up online what the code means and go from there first

BSOD's do not mean your computer is instantly dead.

90% of blue screens are software conflicts or driver corruptions. These days its very rare for a physical component to fail unless you have been very careless with your laptop

Why are people saying hard drive and dead??

You need the crash code from the bsod... It's at the top in bold white text.

Bsods are caused by the os getting unexpected results from the hardware, so its to do with hardware faults or potentially driver faults.

You really need the crash code.

Your laptop is almost definitely not dead and its unlikely to be HDD... Ram is more likely then drivers.

When does the bsod occur? Is it consistant? Is it when you do something in particular? Can you pinpoint it or is it random?

However i cant load explorer or google chrome the come up blank thenni het a pop ip saying another site is trying to change my home page then a box appears saying your preference could not be read

What can i do? Shall i uninstall them and reinstall?

If you have Malwarebytes on it then I'd run a scan. Sounds like something has hijacked your browser.

What operating system are you running ?? Also is there a shortcut on your desktop saying browser preference ??

Check your programs for any internet toolbars like Delta toolbar etc as they may have installed themselves and causing an issue.

It's nothing to worry about.

In Firefox, go to 'Firefox', then 'options', in 'general', look at the startup option geoupbox then click 'restore to default'. Click ok. Close browser and reopen. Voila.

It's nothing to worry about.

In Firefox, go to 'Firefox', then 'options', in 'general', look at the startup option geoupbox then click 'restore to default'. Click ok. Close browser and reopen. Voila.

Lols... But you don't have Firefox... Duh...

In ie, its similar.... Options/settings... Look for homepage but click default though. Close and reopen.

Are your browsers completely blank when you load them or are there any messages or errors at all ??

And i i know it sounds silly but have you made sure your connected to your router ?? As if you did a restore etc it may of reset your wifi ??

You need the error code (it'll look something like 0000000000012356x1 or some such nonsense).

Post it and one of us can google it for you.

Ok now i know how to advise you ntoskrnl.exe is a crucial part of windows NT and this is why your system keeps crashing and not working, you need to re install win 7 ( or recover from partition )

It is an essential part of your operating system and without this you will continue to get BSOD, if you have a recovery disc use it

If not the only way to fix is to do a clean install of win 7

If you werent so far away i could install it for you lol, you can get a copy of Win 7 from the likes of PC world etc.

Depending on how much RAM the laptop has you will need a 32 bit or 64 bit version of windows ( less than 3GB means 32 bit more than 4GB means 64 bit )

If you can tell me the full model of your laptop you may be able to recover from the partition, but if the above file has been permanently deleted then your only option is a new Win 7 disc im afraid.

There should be a rescue partition on your hard drive (wi thought this was standard practice since they stopped giving away rescue disks).

I can't remember how you access it though, try tapping F6 during boot up and see if it gives you a repair option...

Hi guys

I got my computer back on but need to set it back to factory settings as it still does blue screen dump

I am unsure how to do this without restarting as the dreaded blue screen will come back i am using a dell laptop if this helps running windows 7

Hitting f8 straight after you press power button should bring up the screen you want and select launch repair console.

It will then run system repair and hopefully reload the file, if not then try a system restore back to earliest possible point on the little calendar. Again though this does not ensure it will reload your missing file.

It sounds to me like the missing file has become corrupt ( virus or trojan ) therefore even system restore or repair will still load the same corrupt file resulting in the same scenario regardless. Since it its fundamental to your operating system your best bet is a clean install of Win 7.

When the Dell logo appears, press F8 several times to open the Advanced Boot Options menu.

NoteNote: If the Advanced Boot Options menu doesn't open, wait for the Windows login prompt. Then restart the computer and try again.

Use the Arrow keys to select Repair Your Computer and then press Enter.

On the System Recovery Options menu, select a keyboard layout and click Next.

To access the recovery options, log in as an administrator and click OK to open the Dell Factory Image Restore menu.

Depending on your configuration, you may need to select Dell Factory Tools and then Dell Factory Image Restore.

Click Next to open the Confirm Data Deletion menu.

Select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box and click Next.

NoteNote: The restore process begins and may take five or more minutes to complete. A message appears when the operating system and factory-installed applications have been restored to factory condition.

After the restore operation is complete, click Finish to restart the computer.
