Campbell vs Dacre

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Alastair Campbell challenged Paul Dacre on Newsnight to defend the Daily Mail's role in public life.

Now he has a petition on the go asking for Dacre to meet him in front of the cameras for a debate.

Are Dacre and Rothermere worried about what will be said about their parents?

Has Alastair Campbell taken this too far?

Is anyone signing his petition?

Agreed but Campbell is equally cowardly

More pertinently - why can't an experienced politician such as Ed Miliband capable of dealing with this without help

We watched it again last night after dinner so that we could discuss it.

He's not an MP - does he have to be to raise the question about the Mail's role in public life?

He was employed as the Labour spin merchant but he left, had his alcoholic phase, had a breakdown and returned to spin himself.

Rothermere has already begun to capitulate by authorising the editor of Mail on Sunday to "unreservedly" apologise "for a reporter intruding into a private memorial service" for Labour leader Ed Miliband's uncle.

Two tabloid scum have been suspended.

I haven't taken it personally - what on earth has given you that idea?

If what you meant was that only Miliband should challenge Dacre and/or Rothermere that's a different question to 'is he (Campbell) an MP?'. By what you say now it wouldn't matter if an MP made the challenge as only Miliband should in your view.

It's not at all personal to me. I've met some of the players but I don't know them. I'm just interested.

I'm no fan of a The Daily Mail, by a long shot but the same question could also be asked of Alastair 'Malcolm Tucker' Campbell's role in public life, or at least the bullshit he used to spin for New Labour.

Or are we to assume he's one of the 'good guys' now, a bit like people did with loveable old William Hague, who has also come back and bit a few arses!

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I think anyone with any conscience at all should be asking the Daily Mail to defend their recent stance on attacking people who are dead for political reasons. Not that long ago they were complaining about people speaking ill of the dead after Margaret Thatchers death, so why is one OK to be attacked, and one isn't?

I must admit I would be happy to see Campbell debate with Dacre, but then I think the Daily Mail is a rag written by people considered too ridiculous to work at the Sport, so I may be biased.

I saw Campbell speak a few years ago when he did his one-man show. He was far more eloquent, intelligent and interesting than any of the many politicians I've seen.

The whole audience was eating out his hand by the end, despite him getting some boos when he spoke about Iraq.

At one point he was asked what he would change if he could only change one thing, and without hesitation said he would ban private schooling. Can you imagine a modern politician saying something so radical? Incidently, it got the biggest reception of the night.

Most politicians are far more intelligent, interesting and eloquent once they move away from politics, the same goes for Campbell. He wouldn't have said the same about private schooling had he still been part of New Labours inner circle, so you're comparing oranges to apples

I signed petition this has nowt to do with politics anymore as mail on sunday has suspended two reporters for going to a milliband private family memorial for an uncle reporters wanted dirt for story this week.

Mail bosses say they were not authorised seems like the news of world scenario blaming rogue reporters.

Dacre and his boss are disgraceful and should be held to account. To their credit cameron, clegg and heseltine condemned the mail. Michael gove didnt then turns out his wife works for the mail. Says it all really.

Hmm, three trillion pounds...

Let's take the Dept Work and Pensions estimated figure for benefit fraud in 2012:

£1.2 billion

DWP estimate of its overpayments each year through its own mistakes:

£1.4 billion

Total: £2.6 billion the taxpayer should have kept in 2012.

.

Estimated amount of money due to British taxpayers lost through tax avoidance:

£5 billion

Inland Revenue estimate of the shortfall between what it is due and what it actually collects caused by error, tax avoidance and tax evasion:

£30 billion

So. That three trillion....

Just as a broken clock tells the correct time twice a day, Campbell is right to lambast Dacre but I think he is also using this as a means to promote his latest book and get himself centre-stage again.

Of course the lazy-arsed producers at BBC News keep inviting him to speak on just about every programme (except possibly The Great British Bake-Off) when he has a book to flog as they have done since he got them to capitulate over the sexed-up dossier scandal, so it's no surprise really.
