"Alastair Campbell challenged Paul Dacre on Newsnight to defend the Daily Mail's role in public life. Now he has a petition on the go asking for Dacre to meet him in front of the cameras for a debate. Are Dacre and Rothermere worried about what will be said about their parents? Has Alastair Campbell taken this too far? Is anyone signing his petition? " yes please.... on newsnight the other night when the issue first started dacre sent his deputy to debate with campbell campbell absolutely eviserated him.... havent seen anything that grusome since my favourite mp, Stella Creasy took apart resident lads mag toff toby young over the issue of iternet trolls...

We watched it again last night after dinner so that we could discuss it. I think Toby Young's father most turn in his grave so often that he might rise to the surface.

"Neither Dacre nor Rothermere will accept. Cowards both. Agreed but Campbell is equally cowardly More pertinently - why can't an experienced politician such as Ed Miliband capable of dealing with this without help " "is campbell camped in with labour again? yet another like to old, nu labour" Yet again, those with no answers seek to change the subject.

"is campbell camped in with labour again? yet another like to old, nu labour Campbell never left the party as a member as far as I'm aware." honestly didnt know he was a member, as such, but an employee (pr consultant/spin doctor, call them what you will) but he isnt an mp though, no? not changing the subject, _nny,raising a point and asking questions. how else would one learn?

He's not an MP - does he have to be to raise the question about the Mail's role in public life? He was employed as the Labour spin merchant but he left, had his alcoholic phase, had a breakdown and returned to spin himself.

If what you meant was that only Miliband should challenge Dacre and/or Rothermere that's a different question to 'is he (Campbell) an MP?'. By what you say now it wouldn't matter if an MP made the challenge as only Miliband should in your view. It's not at all personal to me. I've met some of the players but I don't know them. I'm just interested.

"I'm no fan of a The Daily Mail, by a long shot but the same question could also be asked of Alastair 'Malcolm Tucker' Campbell's role in public life, or at least the bullshit he used to spin for New Labour. Or are we to assume he's one of the 'good guys' now, a bit like people did with loveable old William Hague, who has also come back and bit a few arses!" It would be the only question I would ask "Tucker" Campbell if I was running the Mail.

"Speaking of spin doctors (and changing the subject as approved by posters [above]). It turns out Lynton Crosby, Cameron's chief spin doctor is using an offshore company in Malta (called Rutland) to 'manage' his tax affairs." But that's just manipulating current taxation rules, not like those dirty benefit scroungers that cost the country upwards of three trillion pounds a year with their flat screen TV's and expensive sportswear from Sports Direct...

" But that's just manipulating current taxation rules, not like those dirty benefit scroungers that cost the country upwards of three trillion pounds a year with their flat screen TV's and expensive sportswear from Sports Direct..." Hmm, three trillion pounds... Let's take the Dept Work and Pensions estimated figure for benefit fraud in 2012: £1.2 billion DWP estimate of its overpayments each year through its own mistakes: £1.4 billion Total: £2.6 billion the taxpayer should have kept in 2012. . Estimated amount of money due to British taxpayers lost through tax avoidance: £5 billion Inland Revenue estimate of the shortfall between what it is due and what it actually collects caused by error, tax avoidance and tax evasion: £30 billion So. That three trillion....

" Just as a broken clock tells the correct time twice a day, Campbell is right to lambast Dacre but I think he is also using this as a means to promote his latest book and get himself centre-stage again. Of course the lazy-arsed producers at BBC News keep inviting him to speak on just about every programme (except possibly The Great British Bake-Off) when he has a book to flog as they have done since he got them to capitulate over the sexed-up dossier scandal, so it's no surprise really.

"Then check out the same Mehdi Hasan praising Dacre's views on religion social conservatism in a letter he sent asking for a job at The Mail in 2010. . "The Mail has a vitally important role to play in the national debate." "I am also attracted by the Mail’s social conservatism on issues like marriage, the family, abortion and teenage pregnancies" Gobshite for hire, like most of the rest."
